Oh for crying out loud Montanna... DVD had been out well before the PS2 emerged and was the much desired successor to the much flawed VHS format. VHS being the bigger seller up until 2003 (assuming that's even true) doesn't mean anything other than DVD players were expensive, thus, surprise surprise, the PS2 was not only a DVD player but a gaming device all in one. I know I had a PS2 before my house ever had a DVD player and I imagine it was much the same for alot of people.

PS2 launched with DVD already established and growing, for the price of a good DVD player, you could get a PS2, it was a fucking win win.

PS3 launched with not only with Blu-Ray a feshly released and unproven format but with HD formats as a whole uproven. Blu-Ray was in the midst of a fevered format war with HD-DVD and to this day the benefits of HD formats are still arguable at best. DVD was a step towards utility & convenience over a severly outdated predicessor, it was a no brainer. Blu-Ray is only a step towards luxury and will never be the revolution to DVD that DVD was to VHS.

It's not an equal step, but it's still a step forward worth investing in. The PS3 is now a "fucking win win" since the PS3 caused the war to end. The biggest convenience for Blu-ray is that, unlike CDs and DVDs, it can't be scratched. Skips and disc read errors should be mostly forgotten.

I wouldn't say can't...just very hard to scratch. You pretty much have to intentionally scratch a Blu-ray disc. At least in my experience. I always have to tell my parents to put discs back in the cases...because of past events with the PS2 and PS1, but it's still a habit for them....but my PS3 discs don't seem to suffer much damage if any at all if they're just left out in the open for a little while to collect dust before I go put them back in their cases.

I can't rank them but

- too high price fo the PS3
- MS not dropping price enought in 2007
- Sony not securing GTA4
- MS not buying the full exclusivity of GTA4
- Sixaxis

(sorry for focusing on this gen only)

So basically, all of the mistakes Sony made, and then all of the mistakes Microsoft made to prevent themselves destroying Sony?

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

In no particular order:

PS3 Launch Pricing
RROD
Delays to big PS3 titles
Countless Dire Games released this gen

I...uh...rented a game and tried to sandpaper it. It played flawlessly. You can scratch the outer surface but you almost have to shave the outside coating off to change how it plays. Tossing it around and leaving it out should have no effect. Finger prints also will have no effect. If something like that or dirt gets on it, you can wipe it off with anything because it won't scratch. It really is awesome.

For me it's:

#5. Sony setting a ridiculous launch price for their PS3. This gives the public a bad first impression of the console, indirectly benefitting the Wii's image as the "cool console to have".

#4. Sega quickly releasing many peripherals for their thriving Sega Genesis (32X, Sega CD) and dropping support for them as quickly. This alienated both gamers and developers and cost Sega loads in cash.

#3. Sega designing the Game Gear so that it requires a whopping 6 AA batteries to function, and that it drains the battery life extremely fast. Most consumers who haven't heard of the rechargeable power pack are hence discouraged from buying the system due to the high long term costs of playing the handheld.

#2. Nintendo insisting on using cartridges on the Nintendo 64. The higher costs and limited space make many games releasable only on the PSX (without significant compression, that is). This alienated third party developers and harms Nintendo's public image.

#1. Allocating only 6 weeks of development time to the E.T. game on the Atari 2600. The lack of time and thought that went into that game led to most of the public perceiving the game as rubbish and indirectly caused a video game crash.

Wow.  I know they were tougher but that's ridiculous.  I suppose it's the fact that it has a stronger read laser?  (Total guess people)

there you go.

you sir, have won a well deserved internets.

I thought Gamecube not having any redeeming values except for the small square shape, nice loading drive, and nintendo titles was a pretty big disappointment.

What is your list of the worst mistakes made in gaming? So many to choose from, but what is your list?

Mine is...

1. Virtual Boy
2. Nintendo saying "screw off" to third party developers with the N64.
3. Sega abandoning Saturn third party support in favor of forcing the Dreamcast.
4. Capcom disolving Clover Studios
5. Blu-Ray as the standard for the PS3
6. UMD

I know, not much of a list, but maybe you can do me one better.

you are full of crap. about blu-ray being the standard for the ps3.

Thats one of the reasons why the ps3 has edged out the x360 so much
