I'd understand a new handheld generation and maybe M$ being stupid and releasing new consoles but Sony and Nintendo both said they will not release a console in 2010.

Well, would Sony and Nintendo allow Microsoft to release a console without answering within 12 months?
Unless Iwata spontaneously decides that he got it wrong, there won't be a Wii 2 or DS 2. Any successors to those two systems produced will re-define the market again. Nintendo already made it perfectly clear that they're not playing the "incremental upgrade" game any more. "Disrupt or be disrupted" is their new strategy. Meaning they won't release a successor to either until both are in their twilight years, so long as their competitors keep going down the incremental upgrade route.
The only case where this might not happen is if a competitor disrupts the handheld and/or console market(s) (which is unlikely from Sony or MS). Then they would be obligated to respond with a disruption of their own to keep from getting consumed by the new market.
Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

All I can say is that probably Nintendo will be the last to enter in the next gen.
Nintendo has the advantage of price cut and leadership.
No need to wonder much about why Nintendo don't do price cuts on Wii,
Not to mention the fact that Wii Fit seems to be something huge in US.
Being the last would also avoid an episode like the Sixaxis.
(Man..... that was really bad press back that time)
I think everyone also expects to all future cosoles to have motion controllers.
(Well.................. what a fad.............. =P)
| Me said: looking at Nintendo's track record they always stagger their handhelds and consoles and with the launch of DS demo station and Ninty's step into download games and DLC I think it's more likely they'll be a new handheld thats slimmer with a storage capacity of some sort. That alone pushes a new console back to 2011 (if the handheld launched next year in 09) at the very earliest - 2012 is more likely. MS will be first in my opinion as the wii will still have the casuals attention, the PS3 will have moved comfortably into 2nd and they'll be floundering. |
At least someone mentioned this =)
Nintendo will NOT release a handheld and a Console in the same year folks, I gaurantee it. The business model they're built on keeps one piece of hardware in the middle of its life as a new one launches so that they always have a stable leg to stand on.
More over Nintendo will feel very little pressure to move to new hardware if sales are still brisk, granted they might not be as high as they are now or next year in 2010 but they will still be very high and they won't just abandon that cashflow. Particularly when the Wii has already shown that next to the HD consoles consumers will still pick it....newer consoles won't damage that much if at all even if they implement motion controls (hello Zune vs iPod). By the time 2010 rolls around Nintendo will be synonymous with motion controls to the average consumer and that is a branding effect that will take time to overcome (and it will be overcome eventually).
