Killing one of their cash cows wouldn't make sense.
And really PS2's sales don't hurt PS3's ones, right now they have different targets.
Unless sales fade away before, PS2 will die when PS3 will become cheap, and it wouldn't be bad for Sony, if it will cost little and PS2 games market will sill be desirable, to put again BC in future PS3 models, it would ease the definitive transition and keep cash coming from PS2's best sellers.

PS2 is making sony a lot of money for them, why risk more losses for what would probably lead to a boost in wii sales?

Umm PS2 outsold 360 and PS3 last year ...

and its at 130 million ( /129 million as of 31st Dec 07) and STILL selling well ... SONY can still sell another 10 - 20 million so why should they stop now ?

Why would Sony stop making a system that is making lots of profit for them? The PS2 is still selling pretty strongly and like others have said it(and the PSP profits) helps to offset the losses from the PS3.

The PS2 is still a good system for people who want to play some great inexpensive games at a low price. I know if my PS2 kicked the bucket, I'd pick up another one, just because it isn't too expensive and I already have a lot of PS2 (and PS1) games that I play on it.

The PS2 enables Sony to target a markets which are impossible for the PS3 to target with it's current price , libary diversity etc.h
