Why would Sony stop making a system that is making lots of profit for them? The PS2 is still selling pretty strongly and like others have said it(and the PSP profits) helps to offset the losses from the PS3.
The PS2 is still a good system for people who want to play some great inexpensive games at a low price. I know if my PS2 kicked the bucket, I'd pick up another one, just because it isn't too expensive and I already have a lot of PS2 (and PS1) games that I play on it.
