Forums - Gaming - Beauty is skin deep: Calling out the graphics pimps

I wonder if the author has made anything in this article by himself - all his arguments and even the exact wording was used before millions of times on several forums. All I can say about this article is "redundant and needless".

We don't need to start the discussion again (without any new points to discuss - this article hasn't been able to deliver any), for the outcome is already clear to everyone of us.

 @ Griffin )

may I pre-order a copy of Colorzone ? when will it be released ?

Yeah, it's quite enjoyable to read threads where people find new ways to say the same thing as everyone els ...

Seriously though, most people who are old enough can remember drooling over the screenshots of highly anticipated games which turned out to be average (or worse); its about time that we started to demand more from developers and stop hyping games based on what they look like.

griffin: I can guarantee you that a lot of people would really like a game like that. Kinda like 300 PG. =P

Of course that's not really what I mean.

Do you see it now?

I know its an old story but I do agree with it.

games need to start with gameplay first - graphics are then the level you want to aim for based on the game.

It's also important to understand that graphics can make a difference but can't change core gameplay.

Uncharted and GoW on 360 are both very good duck and cover shooters IMO - both play well and are engaging and deserve the praise they got. That both looked fantastic added to their immersion but it would only be gloss without the underlying gameplay.

It reminds me of the old argument about films - great script first, then shoot it. Of course all too often now its work out the action scenes and try and out CG the last film without worrying about story/dialogue...

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

 My turn.

Yoda - Great graphics do not a great game make.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

So, again; we are all assuming that Killzone 2 will be the most horrible shooter to date with terrible gameplay and nothing other than good visuals (which are crap according to a few members in here).
I really hope this game turns out to be worth the wait, it'll be twice as savoury when A; I get a good game to play and,

B; People will shut the hell up about how terrible this game is one year before its release.

if you wanna talk all visuals and no gameplay, see Crysis, it is a prime example of what the OP is angling for here.

Seems to me most of these people who complain about how hd console gamers care about graphics and are oh so shallow then go out and buy the wii and tell everyone that metroid and mario galaxy are beautiful and can rival hd consoles in terms of graphics.

AGAIN: I don't know why sony has to reinvent the genre ,,,,Crysis got pariases and full score all around for good visuals and good physics(which are good for KZ2 aswell)

but when it's sony's turn they have to reinvent genre,,,this is getting tiresome,,,let's see how they review ninja gaiden 2,,,the game is basically the first one with updated graphics,,,for god sake even the save booths in ninja gaiden 2 are the same statues(with same color)as ninja gaiden 1 .I am sure they give it 9 and Still it's a good game solgan,,,,but if sony was doing this (like ratchet and clacnk)they get burned cause they didn't reinvent,,,hypocrisy much?

God, get this straight people: this isn't about Sony, MS, or Nintendo. It's about games that try to get hype by graphics alone. The article points out Killzone 2 but don't let that fool you that this is the only game that does that and only PS3 games are guilty of this. Take off your console defensive goggles for a moment and actually try reading what the article is trying to say.

Yeah, it is something that has been said over and over again but that's only because people have to bring the console wars into this and turn it into a fanboy flame fest.

-edit-

It's also not saying games can't concentrate on looking good. In fact, please try to make your game look as good as you can. Just when you're trying to hype your game, don't *just* sell us on how it looks.

i get the point of the art...and i agreee with ya T

Honestly, I rarely see people mention that Killzone 2 will be awful but I see a lot of people point out that Killzone was a game that was hyped to be a 'Halo Killer' and turned out to be mediocre/average in practically every way except for visuals; many of these people (myself included) warned that Factor 5 could produce amazing visuals, and enjoyable flight sequences, but when it came to generating "New" gameplay had struggled in the past, so PS3 fans should not get too excited about Lair. Does this mean that Killzone 2 will be awful? No, but you should be very careful about hyping it too much unless you really enjoy eating crow.
