Do you guys mostly stick with the same combatants in as many battles as possible, or switch it up to even them out? I do the former.
 

 doing side battles does help in this game, A LOT.. although don't do it too much, or else the game will get too easy about boring. What I do is get everybody all levled to the same level.

 

for your situation, get everyone level up to 17 would help you A LOT.. or else you'd see Lianne getting killed everytime.

Depends on your crew.

If you just use the same team all the time, then you don't need to bother doing side battles much as your members will all level up just fine as they are.

If you like making the most out of all your team, then yes, do.

I would use Jeanne, Roger, Marcel, Gile (he needs to be higher. He was lvl 17 for me), and Liane. Liane is VITAL to later on in the story. Get her higher. Over 15 for this level.

Trust me. Im stuck on the last boss. She is vital for the game.

These are my favorite and the best (imo) characters in the game. I'd ditch Rufus and keep La Hire as a tank because he take tons of damage. What gems do you have equipped?

Yeah, you have to do lots of free combat battles. The thing that sucks about it is that you gain very little experience points on battle (you'll find out later on), and you have to rely on those bonus exp points at the end of the battle. Try to get everyone on your party around the same level. Equip most of them with heal and stay close together because if you stay close together, you get that unified guard thing. It helps because it lowers the chances of getting hit or lowers the damages. It is a boring thing to do free combats, but it'll help you.

Rufus starts out pretty bad, but as he levels up, he becomes a killing machine. His HP is high enough that La Hire's defensive advantages mattered very little.
