Forums - Gaming - What are some of the games with the best writing?

Metal gear solid might have good writing, but the fact that there is so much damn exposition drives me crazy. Other than the original PS1 MSG (still the best in the series), I can never finish the games. I get sick of watching those long cut scenes. If MGS was a Hollywood movie, it would be like The Lady in the Water with guns.

And Super Paper Mario had clever writing, but do you really need 10,000 voice bubbles to get a plot point across.

I vote for Eternal Darkness, especially when you play it multiple times. You pick up things in the story you missed the first time through.

No love for Grim Fandango yet?

Actually come to think of it, Lucas Arts had some of the best writers in the business for a while there, if you saw a game built on the SCUMM engine, you could rest assured that it was going to be worth every penny you spent.

What the hell happened since then...

This thread fails for no one mentioning Planescape: Torment yet. I mean, what other game compares to Planescape: Torment in writing and story? Planescape: Torment is truly the pinnacle of videogame writing and storytelling.

Other great examples are also Fallout 1 and 2, Grim Fandango, Baldur's Gate 2, Deus Ex, The Longest Journey, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, the Myst series and Full Throttle.

Did I mention Planescape: Torment already?

It would have to be The secret of monkey island every time for me.

TTYD is (IMO) the best Mario game ever. You have to play it!

OT:

Tales of Symphonia
Kingdom Hearts
Baten Kaitos [series]

Those games have crappy crappy writing.

Don't confuse "A game I like" with "A game with great writing."

I'm going to say Mass Effect, just because of the thousands of lines of dialogue they had in that game.
