Forums - Website Topics - Site handling large digg load fairly well

I have been getting a sqrl error or something, but it seemed fine as more and more users were coming, then it went wrong and the users fell to 4500 (but I was still getting errors)

it seems better now (a little slow maybe)

Around the Network

I had plenty of errors, but it was way better than last week, and if I refreshed, I would get my page. All while having +7500 users online. When It dropped back down to ~4500 it started to load faster with less errors, but still much better than last week. When it drops back to the usual 2k, it'll probably be great.

I remember when a digg would hit, and with ~3-4k, you couldn't make a new thread at all.

Obviously, the server isn't as good as some of the other major websites, but performed very well for the size of this site.

We've had to upgrade our hosting package. The slowdown was a result of reaching our bandwidth limit and also some faulty hardware which was resulting in packet loss. Things should be working much better now.

Think we hit 7639 users online at one point, anyone see it higher than that?

I saw it at 8500+ at one point

At approx 6k users I got MySQL related error (too many connections), but when it went down to 5700-5800, it was working ok (but slower than normal).

unfortunately I have great problems reading the site normally (not to mention the wii opera related problem)

Yeah, I came here and it said it had over 3000 guests,
Since here they claim they saw 8000+ guests I said wow
the server is doing great!

probably not directly related....

I have the occasional problem where the page loads with no CSS and thus looks all crappy. Usually a refresh takes care of that.

I also had a total freeze of my Wii last night when I opened a forum. 1st time that has ever happened (granted I don't usually come here on my Wii). I assume that is the Wii opera related problem noted above?

No, Superchunk, the Opera related issue is that threads with 40+ posts in them (sometimes lower) won't render.

I'm no web-scientist, but perhaps, an automatic browser-detector could detect that Opera is being used, and set the maximum posts per page to 35, or something.

Or have an option for the number of posts per page in our control panel, perhaps.

here come some more Diggers. The article just made the Top 10 for the day. =D Welcome diggers!

nope, I only saw it at like 68??. That shocked me. Impressive server here ioi. I'd love to know the specs.

Nothing too impressive.  It's just a dual CPU single core AMD 2.2 GHZ with 2GB of RAM.   It's all in how you tune it...

Outgoing bandwidth is the primary factor that runs out first...   (and is the most expensive to upgrade).
