PS3 ad banned for touting backwards compatibility

A television advertisement created by UK retailer PC World promoting the PS3 has been yanked from the airwaves. GI.biz reports the Advertising Standards Authority found the ad "misleading" because it claimed the PS3 could play all PS2 games. PC World retorted that the system can play a significant amount of PS2 titles -- and lost.

Now, if only 26 complaints can get the ASA to ban a Kane & Lynch poster, we can only imagine how many rabid fanboys it took to ban this "misleading" ad. We've been unable to find a version of the commercial online, but if anybody finds it, we'll give thanks and place it after the break.

Personally, I'm not sure where I stand on this.  I have a PS3 that I can happily enjoy my PS2 games on, and they're upscaled to boot.  Of course, it's a 60-gig, and they're a rare and exotic animal now, and aren't being manufactured.  I think it's good that the ad was pulled, as currently, the average consumer that only goes by TV ads will pick up their 40-gig expecting to be able to sell the PS2 to offset the price.  This consumer will be disappointed.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I think that while it's helped to lower the price, it's something that they should have kept, or should at least introduce software BC to the newer BCless units.

Not seen the ad, but PC World should know better. If this was a Sony ad then things might be a tad more embarrising.

Hmm, pie.

I really dont see how it could have been so hard to put software BC in the 40gig for about the same price, i just dont understand that at all.

Software BC is a pain in the ass to make and keep the pirates of your back at the same time. I am sure it will come soon, it just needs to be safe for release first.
