NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. - One city commission wants to divide Florida into two states: North Florida and South Florida. The North Lauderdale City Commission says in a resolution that it's not confident in state leaders when it comes to collecting and spending their own money.

It also says it would be "in the best interests of the citizens and residents" to divide the state.

Commissioner Rich Moyle says they're frustrated with the state Legislature "ignoring the cities in South Florida." But he acknowledges the idea likely won't pass.

When asked Tuesday about the resolution, Governor Charlie Crist could only muster up a laugh.

Meanwhile, other municipalities and counties are being asked to join in the resolution. The boundary line would be from Palm Beach County down through Monroe County.

Opinion, I hope this doesnt happen, this would be interesting yet very odd as I live in Florida. I'm great with having 51 states in the USA but splitting Florida makes zero sense. Split a big state like California or Texas.

It will never happen, but I have heard that there is a big problem in Florida with taxes being spent in an unfair manner.

 not really, Florida has always stayed within budget. The problem is that a bill that passed that cut taxes is making itso they have to cut funding everywhere.

One city commission wants some attention. This is so stupid, but miami has always wanted to be the captial.

Fort Meyers - Naples - Fort Lauderdale/Miami - West Palm

That riduculus idea would have only have Fort Lauderdale/Miami - West Palm in the new state.

 It wasn't that Florida was spending too much, it is that all the taxes collected in Southern Florida are spent on Northern Florida because that is where the capital and the politicians are.

Kind've reminds me of the US prior to the Civil War.  The majority of the federal government's revenue came from tariffs paid by Southern farmers, yet the far more populous North got to decide where all the money was spent (and decided when to increase tariffs whenever they pleased, like the tariff of 1828). 

I say more power to the people of Southern Florida.  If the motion passes, then it will prove that Americans have at least some say in how much power the government has these days.
