Forums - Sony - Will MGS4 numbers be > or < than GTA4 for PS3?

I hope it outsells GTA4, but doubt it will, although considering its being classed as the first ps3 exclusive you HAVE to have, it could push GTA far

The same was said about Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, and Lair, as well as Ratchet and Clank and Motorstorm to lesser degrees.

why do you ps3 haters keep bringing up the past? msg4 is a defferent beast, its going to seell ALOT of software and hardware in june. this is last mgs, EVERYBODY want to play this( bisides the ps3 haters) and this bundle WILL OUTSELL the wii the week of june 21st. do you know how many people want and are happy the 80gig is back? i bet 200 thousand or more for america and over seas in the first week. this is the game everybodys beens waiting for, it can easily sell 1 million in a week in america and obviously more in europe and the others. ALOT of wii and 360 fans are gonna eat major crow after the week of june 21st.................SOMEBODY QUOTE THIS POST..............get ready to be shocked

The best way to predict the future is to understand the past ...

The Metal Gear Solid and the Splinter Cell series have both demonstrated that there are limits to the number of people that want these spy/stealth based action games; in both cases the sales tend to plateau at 4 to 5 million units across all platforms. What this tells me is there is a maximum potential for a game like Metal Gear Solid 4 which falls far short of a lot of people's predictions.

@Desroko

Thats very true, but from the publicity so far, and pre-release hype, Sony would have us believe this is the gaming version of heaven. This is touted as the game that blows everything else out of the water. Hopefully it is

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

You shouldn't trust what PR says ...

Genji and Lair were both supposed to be fantastic games that demonstrated what was great about the PS3.

MGS4 will sell less than GTAIV but will sell way more consoles. I know lots of people that will buy a PS3 when MGS4 comes out. I expect MGS4 to sell about 2m WW in the first week. Compare that to GTAIV's 6m... lol

I get the feeling some people misinterpreted the question and thought it was whether MGS4 on the PS3 would outsell GTA4 overall (XBOX360 + PS3) when it was whether MGS4 on the PS3 would outsell GTA4 on the PS3.  GTA4 on the PS3 didn't sell close to 6m in week 1.  GTA4 overall did.  So, the comparison should be to what GTA4 did on the PS3, which looks like it was over 2 million, but under 3 million.

I don't know which will be higher, but will definitely be interesting to see given all the strong opinions about what will happen here. I'm waiting to see what kinds of scores it gets.  I know GTA4 got 10s on many sites for graphics and overall and I'm wondering how this will compare both for graphics and overall scores.

Bomb level: slowly reaching towards 1m
Decent level: BioShock, Mass Effect (1.8-2m)
My expected level: 2.5m
What Sony fanboys wish level: Gears of War (5m)
No f*ing way level: Halo 3, GTA4 (8m)

OT: No way its going to beat GTA4 on PS3 (with expected 5m sales)

In that case the Sony fanboys aren't far from the truth. GoW is at 5 mill sold 1.5 years after release.

I believe MGS4 will sell over 4 million copies in the same amount of time.

GTA4 on PS3? Over 6 million.

The key word is 'to lesser degrees'. Those games were considered the first good exclusives, Uncharted being the closest to MGS4. But MGS4 is the first must-get title. If MGS4 fails (which I highly doubt), the only significantly bigger title would be Gran Turismo 5.

it well probably sell more hardware because of the bundle, but software no. no mgs game has ever come close to touching a gta game, unless the 4 million mgs fanboys that didnt buy mgs3 buy a copy

GTA4- anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

I could be wrong, but I believe that Metal Gear Solid is a series which has seen a large portion of its sales come from the "High Profile Game Effect" ... Essentially, this can be explained as "Whenever you have a popular system, high profile exclusive games released for that platform see a boost in sales because people who aren't (normally) interested in the game buy it because it is high profile on a system they own"

A good example of this effect would be Mario Party 8 which has outsold all previous Mario Party Games even though it is one of the worst Mario Party games, and it could be argued that its success is due to the Wii's popularity more than anything else.

If I'm correct, Metal Gear Solid 4 will only provide a moderate boost for the PS3 which is short lived because a lot of people who previously bought Metal Gear Solid games will not be willing to buy a system to play the game.

You are wrong. The game sells well because it's fantastic. It has a "high profile game effect" because it's awesome. It's a unique experience and gets great reviews. When MGS 1 came out, it was the pinnacle of mixing action and story telling in videogames. Mario Party is a fun game. People were excited about it being on a new system. That's the "anticipated series on a new console effect." MGS4 has that, too. A lot of people that have played MGS must buy a PS3 to buy this game because for what it does, it is the best game out there.
