Forums - Nintendo - So... did GTA IV dent the Wii's armor in america yet like Forbes said?

Roflinator said:

Wow.

Halo 3 only slowed the Wii down temporary in the console race and GTA4 did nothing to it, and yet the Wii just got more units sold than it did last week instead. O_o

Mario Kart Wii is definitely one of the reasons, that and isn't the Wii getting more shipments?

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though :P

As far as i can remember, the wii has not yet been "slowed" ever in america.. the release of Halo 3 boosted 360 sales, and the wii sales remained exactly on par with what it normally and still does.. sold out

lol yes pretty impressive Wii sales. Nintendo sure stole the GTA thunder by shipping almost nothing last week.

I wasn't going to get into this and had only come to this topic to make sure it wasn't going to get nasty but I just have to clear this up:
  1. Mario Kart isn't Nintendo's most popular franchise, that would be Super Mario Bros.
  2. If you want to get nasty, it took two consoles to beat one Nintendo game that averages a good 10 points lower than it.
  3. Nintendo flooded the market? Yeah, they upped production but flooding the market is when you put A LOT of supply out there and then it just sits there. As long as Wii's move they aren't doing anything wrong.
  4. I could have swore I have seen interview after interview where Reggie says there is no mythical warehouse full of Wii's.

I wasn't going to get into this and had only come to this topic in the hope that it was going to get nasty but I just have to clear this up:

    1. Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros are both part of the same franchise. The clue is in the titles. Confusing, I know.

    2. It didn't take both consoles. Both versions of GTA4 well and truly spanked MKWii.

    3. No comment.

    4. That's called a lie. It's what executives are paid to do.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to remind the wii glory supporters that this is what Pachter predicted. He said the wii would dominate for 2 years before it's sales started to decline. Those 2 years are not yet up. Bubbles can burst.

So is that the official damage control story, or just the latest attempt?

Also, are you and kingofwale the same person?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

So, what your really hoping is that in 6 months, the Wii fad will die down so the PS3 can dominate?

Case you forgot, Pachter updated his Wii prediction. It's no longer dying in December. It's actually dominating for the forseeably future.

Don't put your faith in a year old prediction from a man that has since recanted it.

1. Mario Kart isn't the same franchise as Super Mario Brothers. That's a fact.

2. The PS3 version barely edged out Kart. Why do you have to overstate your argument to make your console look better?

3. I would have no comment as well, since damage controls isn't your strong suit.

4. So, you think that there is a huge factory full of Wii's, and that the whole supply constrainment is a lie, perpetrated to get the Wii to sell better by some theory that revolves around the equally crazy theory of, "If we tell em they can't have it, they'll buy it, so that's the reason Wii's sell so well."

5. If I were a mod, I would ban you for that post.

Good luck waiting for the Wii's bubble to burst, like all those other consoles which were wildly successful and dominated the industry for two years, but suddenly ground to a hault.

Maybe Wii owners will suddenly realize that they shoulda been playing an Xbox 360 this whole time, and we'll see a movie style comeback, which of course is a dream and could never happen in a billion years.

??

The Wii sold 76,608 last week and 398,710 this week.  That's 475,318 over 2 weeks.

Even if they hadn't held them back last week and just distributed them evenly, each week would have been 237,659 which comfortably beats both PS3 sales and 360 sales

Ok then, lets add the last two weeks together and split them in half.... that's about 230k Wii's this week. then.

Oh by the way at anyone wondering about Nintendo's shipments.
It does make sense that they control the shipments so that extras are shipped in time for big releases, but that does not equate to a big warehouse full of Wiis they dig into for big games, it just means they can control supply week by week to better fit with demand.

The massive number of Wiis this week however was more likely a number of big retailers (TRU/Walmart for sure) holding back 2 weeks worth of supply to be released on the Sunday with MKWii. Nintendo did not ship 60k Wiis last week and 400k this week, it would never be different to that extent.

So is that the official damage control story, or just the latest attempt?

damage control? The Wii continued to kick the competition during the biggest game launch for them in NA.

On the other hand I don't know how you see it but comparing numbers is a bit tedious if every other week the Wii sells 50000 and 300-400k because Nintendo does ship how much they please.

Those small weeks still usually win Worldwide, and the big ones...well, you saw last months NPD didn't you?

It's only going to get worse, you realize.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I've never seen sales go that high after "new shipments", it's at 250000 at best in the earlier weeks. So, it's got to be the retailers holding back for even longer times.

As for the GTA IV, it's got excellent sales, no one can deny it. But, in terms of system pushing power, it's weak. And in console wars, system pushing power is what really matters. Nintendo's lucky that it's released on both the PS3 and X360 at the same time.
