Dmeister, what kind of game is it? It's RPG, right? Not a lot of sites have any info about it, and most sites are horrid anyway, but you seem fairly credible, so it would be nice if you wrote some info.

Definitely not an RPG.

Wikipeida says it's "hack-and-slash, adventure, and strategy" which pretty much sums it up.

Basically, there is no leveling system, aside from your Hunter Rank. Your Hunter rank goes up after you compete a set of quests, which consist of gathering quests (finding a certain amount of an item), Slaying quests (killing a certain number of weak monsters) and Hunting quests (Killing a certain monster, usually, very strong, thus where the strategy comes in). Defeating the big monsters is a huge undertaking. You must plan for it immensely. If it's a hot environment, bring cold drinks so that your health doesn't deplete, and vice versa. Bring Sonic bombs if it's an underground creature, so that the sound can make it come to the surface so that you can attack it. Bringing traps, so that you can trap it to capture it, or take a few swipes without it killing you. Then you choose what weapon to use, longswords, greatswords, guns, bowguns, dual swords, hunting horns, gun lances, and a few I can't remember. There's an immense layer of strategy that goes into even the simplest missions, since you never know which mosnters that you will encounter.

It's a VERY niche game. But if you like it, it's awesome.

That's the shortest way that I can sum-up Monster Hunter, but I've cut a lot of corners, and over-simplified everything, which MH doesn't do.

Sounds RPG-ish to me. Would you consider Zelda "definitely not an RPG"?

It shouldn't sound RPG-ish.

It's definitely not RPG-ish.

You should probably play the game before talking about it.  It's completely devoid of a story, that's why it's not RPG-ish.  There really is no point in playing the game, other than getting the materials for your next item, or making your Hunter Ranking go up.

And I mean NO story.

Not a "bad" story.  I mean, they drop you off in a village, a simple tutorial, and the game starts.  That's how it's been for the last six games, and unelss there's a complete overhaul of the game, it's probably going to be the same for this game.

@ Soriku

Read my above post.

@Soriku

"It doesn't need a story to be an RPG"

OMG..please tell me you DID NOT just say that!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I cannot imagine a 2 milllion seller to be a "niche" game in Japan.
MH 3 might bring a lot of hardcore jap gamers to the wii.

Heeeeyyyy!!!! <Snap>

@soriku

Definitely not an RPG. I only have played the psp version, MH Freedom--didn't like it...very boring and repetitive.

The whole point of an RPG is a story.

You're playing the role in a story.

Without a story, you're just playing a game. Story = RPG. This has no story, therefore, it's not a RPG.

And if they added levels, it still isn't a RPG, since there is no story.

And they probably wont, since it's the third in a series of seven that hasn't changed a bit since the first. >_>

@ Soriku

Everyone who's played it (myself, Rout, Drangonlord): "Definitely not an RPG"

You, who have not played it : An RPG.

Who to believe...?

OMG please people, play the game then draw conclusions. Monster Hunter is far from an RPG. And it's really a "try before you buy game".

The camera issues, doing the dame stuff over and over, the extreme difficulty, etc will put off tons of people. The ones that can see through them will find a gem.

But seriously, rent one of the previous games...
