Forums - Website Topics - Sam's possibly impossible way of reducing the number of slowdowns on VGC.

VGChartz is a slow website. That's a fact that every member has come to accept, and we've also come to expect that the site is even slower on certain days of the week, or when certain big releases happen, and a huge number of people come onto the website and push traffic levels through the roof.

Well here's my idea of how to fix the issue, which possibly wouldn't cost much in terms of implementation, and
due to the less stress on servers would save money over time.

My idea is..... torrenting. Well, sort of. Think of it like this: people can download a little client which runs in the
background on their computer, it only takes a small amount of their downstream/upstream.

These clients store some of the less-frequently-updated content; such as boxart, the forum header, the layout graphics, etc. They also contain the previous
weeks sales data.

The server would still be used for storing user accounts, hot-topic forum posts, news articles, and the most-recent week's sales data.

Threads that haven't been posted in for more then say, three weeks, could  be closed and also uploaded to the torrent like system.

Well, what do you guys think? I'm interested in everybodies comments, but I especially want to hear what some
of the big cheese's have to say about my idea.

That wouldn't work for new users/lurkers. They would think it is a virus and the site would get a bad rep.

@sc94597

Not everyone downloads the client, people can opt to download it if they wish. The site would function exactly the same to the common user, but it would completly diffrrently behind the scenes.

 Ok that might work then.

Something most likely more effective:

Have checked boxes on wall comments so you can delete more than 1 at a time. Currently you can only delete one at a time and the entire page reloads.

bad idea. next

Here's a video from my band's last show Check out more (bigger) videos here http://www.youtube.com/user/icemanout

I'm sure little things like those tick boxes for comments, and an easier priority system for the games should help

You think with all the ads on the site and the addition of the Amazon thing ioi would upgrade his system to handle 2000 users correctly..

A forum server and a database server might help. Add some AJAX in there too.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Although I am not going to go into it now, it is incredibly unlikely that that would work. Check out FreeNet if you would like to learn more about why I say that; it is just all too likely that the overhead involved in setting that system up and distributing the tasks would far outweigh any benefits.

Without even getting into the 'trust' issues involved in allowing 3rd parties to host things (Say, there is an IE exploit and someone in the herd decides to infect all VGC users that get the site from them...), here is some reasoning it will not actually help matters at all.

In this analysis, I will use the following terms for simplicity.
Alice = Person wanting to view VGC.
Bob = one part of this distributed hosting system.

1) Alice goes to VGC.com
2) Alice does the normal DNS lookup, and gets the address of VGC's load-balancing server. This takes the same amount of time as it does now.
3) VGC's load-balancing server sends the request off to Bob.
4) Now, Alice's request has to travel through the internet to Bob's computer. This will take 50+milliseconds depending on various factors (almost certainly more). Compare this to the
