Forums - Gaming - New TV for the Gaming Room - Suggestions?

Well I'm finally looking at replacing a 9 year old 36" TV that has served as a constant hub of gaming activity for the entirety of its life (9 years actual, but more like 15 of equivalent usage).

So with that in mind I'm going to be heading to Nebraska Furniture Mart today for a sale and I'm hoping to land a good TV at a good price.

For those who don't know: NFM is the largest (single location) furniture store in the world. It sits on 77 acres with over one million square feet under roof.  Each year there is a weekend sale for stockholder's of BH where we can pick up some nice bargains on everything in the store and of course I'm taking this opportunity this year to do some shopping .  If you want the complete history of NFM and a nice example of the American Dream check it out here (it is a great story).

 Ok so thats the background, the details are as follows:

  • 720p
  • 37" to 47"
  • Highly Resistant to burn-in (it will occasionally get left on)
  • Decent viewing angle, it will face the center seat of an L-shaped couch (thing)
  • The room is usually fairly dark, so brightness isn't a major factor
  • Probably looking to spend around $6-800 and if the deal is good enough as high as $1k (keep in mind

So I'm interested primarily in what brands people think are good as well as if there are any features I should be aware of to look for/avoid. I haven't really looked into TVs in a while and normally I would do this research on my own but its sort of a last minute info gathering process.

Please please if you aren't 100% sure about your info don't post it, I appreciate the help but I really need it to be accurate. So for all of our TV gurus please give me your tidbits, and don't dumb it down~

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

PS - If you have specific suggestions please link to the TV and let me know what a great/good price would be for the TV.

I read 2 days a go that Sony is going to do a major price drop this summer on their TV's (even the brand new models)

So if you like Sony Tv you might want to wait,,,,

If you want the article pm me and I ll find it and post it

@spartanFX,

That is pretty much always true tho, prices changes quickly. I'm expecting some pretty good deals today though, so I might wait just to get the same price when the TV I'm replacing is ready to die any day now.

@everyone else,

Nobody else has advice? I know I've seen 4 page TV topics before on this site, come on TV gurus where are you?

Ok well I'm back and I didn't do too shabby:

Link to the Manufacturer's product page: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/features.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=lcdtv&model_cd=LN46A550P3FXZA

I payed less than this refurb from tigerdirect: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3805477&CatId=3650

After taxes and everything it was a bit more than that would have been with shipping, so overall I'm happy. Note that "and everything" included a stand for it as well.

Talking to other folks who were there (other customers) it seems this was a hot Item because just while we were there they sold 5 or 6 of them. I actually opted to pick mine up on Friday and let someone who was from out of town get theirs today instead, plus I have finals and such this week so I don't need the distraction right now.

Consumer Reports has this model listed as the 4th best (79/100) in the 46-47" category and the 3 that are above it are all 70%-200% more expensive with the best being rated 81/100. So all in all I feel pretty happy about this purchase.
