The Wii offers a last gen experience, seeing as though the PS2 had motion controls and it's own version of Wii fit years before Nintendo had theirs.

Of course and the plethora of games that used it./sarcasm. Let's not forget how flawed the ps eye was.
I have an interesting question.
How do you define a game as having next gen gameplay?
Pacman taught people to run around in dark rooms munching on pills while listening to repettive techno music and for that I somewhat idolise him.

Let's not forget how you can't play your Wii in direct sunlight otherwise the controller stops working.

Damn, guess I won't be playing Wii outside at the BBQ next weekend. You know, I just love me some glar on my TV. Gives everything a golden hue. Sucks I can't play my Wii on it though. Maybe one day I'll get smart and close the frikkin curtains. /sarcasm.
So do you plan to troll this thread all night or what?
The rEVOLution is not being televised
@QAX
Play in direct sunlight and let's see how well you can see your TV regardless of the system you are playing on.

You could strip the star bits finding/shooting feature out completely and it would hardly change a thing. Wii Sports is a good example, though. And I haven't played GTAIV, but from what I've heard it might be another one. I think that procedurally generated animation like this Euphoria system might be what marks the great leap forward in gameplay this gen. At first you might think it's just another graphical thing, but it has the potential to increase immersion and interactivity in game worlds to levels we've never seen. |
After playing GTA IV for about 10 hours I can safely say that the physics system within the game has dramatically changed the way I approach every task in the game. As a result I cannot help but feel that GTA IV is offering a "next-generation" gameplay experience.
Well, last generation didn't have such great online play as the current one, community (interaction with friends while playing), online co-op, rankings, achievements. Current tech allows for a better cinematic flow for many games, you could chalk it up to raw power (graphics) but it definitely adds to the gameplay something more than just "make it look pretty". Next-gen also helps improve on physics, better AI, better framerate, better draw-distance. There are tons of things going on many of today's games that are not simply a result of "more polys, HDR, HD textures, better particle effects".

This. I was going to post almost the exact same thing. SMG does not feature next-gen gameplay. Hell, most of the Wii's games feature gameplay no different than what's been offered before. The only games I can think of that feature unique gameplay are Wii Sports and maybe Zack and Wiki (never played this one, but I hear it makes good use of Wii controls).
Next generation gameplay is pretty hard to define. Physics have been implemented very well in HL2, and I haven't seen any games make better use of physics. And HL2 was released in 2004, and was also ported to the XBox. AI hasn't really shown any improvements IMO. Once you learn how the AI of a game works, the AI in Supreme Commander (2007) is no harder to beat than the AI in Starcraft (1998). In terms of controls, and complexity of games, nothing this generation has come close to matching Falcon 4.0 (1998 I think) or any of the old flight sims.
However, next generation games have definitely improved on previous generation gameplay (for the most part). Whether or not any of this is "next generation" gameplay is subjective IMO. I mean, Echochrome is just about one of the most unique games I've played in a long time, but does that mean it's next-generation gameplay? It could have been done on the PS1.
