Earthbound is one of the hardest games to try and explain to people. It's a strange mix of bizarre, yet believable. They set it in a close to real world setting, and primarily give you "real world" weapons, like baseball bats and yo-yos. Then, as required by RPG law, you get your "magic" (in this case psychic) abilities.
I think a lot of the subtle details really endeared the game to me. You have to hit an ATM to get money. You're a little kid, so if you go too long without calling your mother, you get the "homesick" condition, and randomly miss turns in battle. Little things like that just separated the degree to which you could relate to a game back at the time it was released.
You weren't off on the 70th crystal related emergency situation in a FF game. You were a relatively normal kid who got swept up into his crazy situation, but still just a little kid. I think, at least in my case, this was the believeable kind of fantasy situation that a little kid could place himself in when he daydreamed about being a video game type "hero".
The entire package was top notch, and really hooked me like few RPGs have before.
The dedication you show to any particular console or company is inversely proportional to the number of times you have gotten laid. If you get laid enough, even if you prefer a certain brand, you just don't give enough of a shit to argue about it on the internet.
