This is really funny... seriously do you blindely believe Sony would just sit and watch Microsoft's price offensive in USA? Get real. Both companies are afraid of competitor's next move because price drop of one system will force price drop of another one at the double. They know it. Price drop in USA with such weak USD would push MS in deep red. That's why there was no price drop with GTAIV. Even though it would generate really impressive sales spike.

Sony didn't respond in Europe  because they are strong enough here to carry on even with PS3 much, much more expensive than 360. USA is a different story.

Microsoft's price cuts everywhere else in the world didn't give them unstoppable momentum there, and they have two systems cheaper than the Wii (the Arcade and the Premium) in many areas. In fact, that Arcade is *much* cheaper than the Wii in those areas.

Why do you think a price cut in the US would give them unstoppable momentum?

How so? At similar price points, the PS3 would crush the 360 in the US.  Sony could still cut the price if they needed to.  Plus, Sony is outselling the 360 world wide fairly strongly right now.  The PS3 isn't going anywhere anytime soon, no matter what MS does with their console. 

A price cut now would certainly boost 360's sales , but you must remember it has experienced serious shortages all year long , so the momentum would be short-lived if MS can't supply to meet demand. Demand is already increased due to the GTA effect, I don't think any company in their right mind would cut the price now when they're riding on the biggest release of the year.

And I disagree Sony would respond with a price cut of their own. Sony is expecting to start profiting from the PS3 this summer, and surely they've taken into consideration the GTA boost as well as MGS4 effect. That forecast is based on current prices and the MGS4-DS3 bundle was announced over a month ago and priced at $500 , so a PS3 price cut even just a couple of months AFTER that is VERY unlikely. Expect Sony to cut the price no sooner than fall. As for MS, It could happen now and get no response from Sony for months, but surely they've estimated the boost wouldn't be as significant considering their current production and the profitability they wish/need to attain.

I doubt anybody is cutting prices anytime soon. All of the consoles are selling relatively well, and with huge titles like GTA IV pushing consoles at current prices, why mess with a good thing?

No. The salient fact here is: if Sony cuts the price of the PS3, it will bury the 360. Microsoft don't want none o' that, so they haven't wanted to rock the boat and cause a possible PS3 price drop by cutting the price on the 360.

Right now, MS is at least making money if getting outpaced by PS3. That's fine w/ Microsoft; they just want to make money. Anti-Sony and "winning the war" talk from them was just FUD to whip up the fanboys (to generate sales and make more money). They won't act so as to try to sell more consoles than Sony at all costs. They absolutely cannot win that battle and be profitable. They want to make money though, and they are doing it finally.

As I've posted before, as the consoles' prices drop, the relative value of PS3 rises further and further above the value of 360 because of its capabilities as a Blu-Ray player, its free online ($50/year is a bigger deal if the consoles only cost $149 or whatever), built in wifi, and all that shit.

Edit to add: I think Sony should drop PS3 to $299/$399 within a few months and bury the 360.  They'll make it back in the end by putting the nail in the coffin earlier.

Everyone is making money, and nobody is desperate at this point, so why would they cut prices?  Especially now that GTA 4 has been released, which will inevitably boost sales for both companies.  You also have to consider that Sony probably can't afford to cut the price of the PS3 much more than it already has.  Microsoft probably could, but again, why?  Does it really make sense to cut prices when your product is selling well?

It simply why cut the price when they going to sell consoles because of gta 4 m$ is in great position the ps3 is going nowhere in japan m$ cut there user base in Europe and when m$ cut there price in the us it going to smash sony watch there going to be a 200$ 360 by x mas which will force sony to cut ther prices and they will be father away from making a profit all you sony fanboy seem to forget both the wii and 360 are making money every time they sell a console sony is in a losing battle even if it beat the 360 and comes in second m$ will still make more money and that is what matters

No price drops in the States till fall at the earliest. MS need to just keep plodding along with the games getting them out for xmas. Sony will ride the waves of gta4 Mgs4 and Tekken 6 without dropping the price till September or later when Motorstorm and Resistance sequels arrive.
