Forums - Gaming - HD vs. Wii: Fanboyism Run Rampant

There is absolutely no reason why having HD graphics has to affect the control scheme or Nintendo's approach to the casual gaming market, so I don't really see how you get "Wii Vs. HD".

And of course having more power in the graphics department allows for innovation. Think back to the days of Pacman. Don't you think there were developers with ideas that couldn't see the light of day because the hardware wasn't powerful enough at the time? It's just the same now. If the Wii was capable of HD I think we'd have seen a wider variety of games for it and in sales terms it would have done even better. It just wouldn't have filled bank vaults with cash quite as fast for Nintendo.

I have 3 points.

1) First, I'd like to say I think you chose a great title for this: "HD vs. Wii: Fanboyism Run Rampant." It doesn't just describe the current discussion, but it describes most reviewers as well. They have all grown into their jobs over the last few gaming generations of traditional gaming and are now freaking out and their fanboyism towards traditional gaming is running rampant. It's like they're scared of praising a new idea because they think they'll lose their jobs or something, so they have to praise the shinier same-old HARDER THAN EVER BEFORE. To say that GTA4 is a better game than GTA3 is not a hard stretch. But to say that GTA4 is revolutionizing the industry more than GTA3 is just total bullshit.

2) I disagree with this comment: "The Wii and HD consoles represent different facets of the video game industry. Personal opinion will put one above the other, the truth is they will both push video game technology and video game quality forward; both through innovation."

Upping the pixel count is not innovation. It happens every single generation and is expected and required, and has never not happened. It's not innovative. It's a direct result of technological advancements. Every system will be faster, stronger, smarter, and prettier than the last. That doesn't make them different. Besides, the strongest one never wins. Ever.

3) We're not supposed to bump anything ever. If you really want to bump something, you gotta disguise it with a new idea or angle so you add something to the conversation. Empty bumps are frowned upon, and should be looked at by a doctor.

Whatever... :S

@OP

Well you stated the obvious.... It really comes down to preferences and that's all there is to it. Problem is... Choking people with our own views is wrong. That's the big big big big big problem....

The way I see it is I have the right to bash any console I want. No one is gooing to force me to like a console I don't just because it sells well.

hey man. I'm good with console bashing. You have your right to dislike and let people know what you dislike. What urks people is when some fanboys(no names) present some opinion as fact. Then when proven with evidence that there opinion fact as wrong they dig in and ignore it. Also another thing that bugs people with fanboys. Not brining anything constructive to the board. For example "It sucks" and that's the enire post. Theres no reason behind it. I personaly can't stand the philisohpical descisions around the PS3, but like others we don't always ram our opinions down peoples throats :P

Anways. I agree with Gling Gling and the correct part about imnprovment is not innovation. I would like to see this fanboyism toned down a bit. Mostly in the scope that far too many fanboy posts general have far too much ignorant comments. Ignorances urks me :)

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

There is one thing you ought not to forget is that Wii isn't all about the new audience. It's about expanding the market. By expanding the market, there is still place for older franchises to thrive on the Wii. What a lot of HD fanboy fear is that the 3rd party companies supporting the HD platforms start moving their "hardcore" franchises on the Wii and trying to "casualize" them. So it's not all about a dichotomy but more about a fear of being left behind.

This proves my point: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=37255&start=50

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

I probably generally fall on the "HD" side of things. I have had more great gaming experiences on my Xbox 360 than on my Wii. But to be honest, I find that to be because of the artistry, gameplay and story in the games, rather than the fact that they are "HD." That said, I've had some great times on my Wii.

What I really dropped by to say is this. Despite being quite a good game (very good in fact) I wouldn't label GTAIV the standard-bearer of "HD" gaming, nor Wiifit the standard bearer of "non-HD" gaming. Better examples would be Halo 3/MGS4/Bioshock/Mass Effect and SMG/Twilight Princess/Brawl.

For someone who is labeled as The "360fanboy", you seem to make great points and enjoy all forms of gaming. Pity we can't get the ps3 fanboys like you.

Also hmm GTAIV should be included in the HD gaming, because it is pushing realism graphics and I think that is the point of a lot HD games.

Well the Wii vs. PS360 debate is like Burgers vs. Pizza debate. You have Burger fanboys and Pizza fanboys.

PS3 vs. 360 is like Domino's vs. Papa John's

This is a very good analogy. Though I never heard anyone talking shit about burgers when stuffed crust came out.

You just haven't gone to any company summer picnic planning meetings!  Talk about vicious.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

It is hard out here for us fanboys. So many people hating on us and our way of life. Listen, us fanboys have existed since time immemorial. Us fanboys are not the problem, per se. No, I believe the problem is a new type of fanboy. This new breed of fanboy refuses to engage in cordial discourse, and instead relies on unconventional tactics (spamming and trolling) to make its point. This new breed of fanboy is a disgrace and brings shame on all of us fanboys who are rational and polite.

Also, I think people underestimate the impact a fanboy can have on the company it chooses to support. A company desires a customer that is loyal, and that company will strive to keep such customers. If a company grows complacent and offers an inferior product that disappoints the fanboy, the company should realize that its endeavors are as good as done. I know the popular idiom says that hell hath no fury (like a woman scorned). I, however, would change the idiom to read something like this: hell hath no fury (like a fanboy scorned).

Exactly as starcraft said

Sure, I like my games pretty, but there has to be more than that, as starcraft mentioned. Look at GeOW, you could just stare at it's HD beauty :P  but it also has a pulling story, great gameplay. Same goes with a good % of 360/PS3 games. 360/PS3 aren't just pushing how pretty their games are, they are making more things possible [gameplay and story-wise], that w/o the current hardware would be impossible.

About fanboyism...people defend what they have, and if they hear/read anything negative about what they own, they will jump and defend what's theirs with claws and teeth :P...   Sure, we have our share of idiots who don't look things up before making an opinion, but most of us know our cards :D

Besides, whatever we say, we know deep inside that we want what "X" has, and we know that "X" wants what you have, but we are damn too prideful to say it xD
