Remember when Time Magazine declared 3D0 "Product of the Year"???

Hmm, seems they are wrong a lot. :)
Do you mean the Panasonic console? LOL REALLY? :D Though a few years later we never thought a electronics company like Panasonic could take over the video gaming world. We really never knew what will happen in the future arent we?

No, I mean the EA console. ;).

What went wrong from that console is

1... lack of exclusive games at launch.
2... way too expensive.

yet.. PS3 has the same problem at launch, and Time called it "Failure of the year"...

Which begs the question, why do you ever listen to time magazine ever again?

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

The thread title looks like it was written by Yoda.

I don't think gaming publications actually declare console winners. I've yet to see it anyways.

I've seen it, that why I post this topic its a EGM article its in the front of their cover. Its a long time so I dunno what issue it is but I've seen it. I even remember the cover very well...

end of core gaming days prediction:

E3 2006-The beginning of the end. Wii introduced

E3 2008- Armageddon. Wii motion plus introduced. Wii Music. Reggie says Animal crossing was a core game. Massive disappointment. many Wii core gamers selling their Wii.

E3 2010- Tape runs out

They did it for ratings and Internet traffic. Declaring a winner does absolutely nothing. It only gets them more money. When they need a boost in cash, they'll write up something controversial to get people to their site or magazine....more money for them.

LOL BTW EA wants to produce a console for all without 1st parties like Nintendo, M$ and SONY right? I think that will never happened though, I dunno what happened in the NES era but 3rd party developers says its very grim

I don't think any magazine will declare a winner, if just for the fact that I think many would hate having to say the Wii is the winner.

As for the EA console (off-topic alert), it really would be stupid for them to make their own console. Even with their huge library of relatively mediocre games, I doubt many people would be pushed to the EA console. Who would pick Madden over, say Final Fantasy? Medal of Honor over Halo? FIFA over PES (that's a more tough one). Even if they buy Take-Two and make GTA an exclusive, it'll probably suck anyway, and someone (maybe programmers who left TT after the buyout?) will just make a GTA-clone for the other consoles that will be better anyway.

Plus, there's little money in the hardware business. The money they'd save by not having to pay royalties to hardware makers would probably be offset by the cost of actually having to make and research the hardware. And then if it flops? We have three very strong competitors in the market right now, which is much different than the normal one monopoly that can be overthrown, and there isn't room for a 4th unknown, which more non-EA 3rd parties are probably going to shy away from.

Also, multi-platform games tend to sell more, so it would be counterproductive for them really.

Course, this doesn't mean I don't hope they actually do this, because it'll probably (rough guess, 95% probability of failure) be a failure, and then EA will crash and burn, and they'll either have to actually make some good games, or go out and then the games they own (GTA probably, Maxis team) can leave and make good games.

I thought they allready declared the PS3 the winner before this gen actually started.

They want a video game monopoly, thats why they want to take take2, rockstar they never care but EA wants to take the soprts titles of take2 on their own. the 2k soprts titles came from take2. Thats why they want to make a one console without 1st parties.

I saw alot of this too before the PS3/Wii launches then it died down when... that didn't happen.

OT: The thing about this generation is that it is not as cut and dry as the last one. Even thought the Wii is selling faster than any other console (ever I believe) it is still competing with a 360 that is doing well (despite what the naysayers say) with increased sales even though the Wii is selling like crazy and a PS3 that has even better sales now than the 360. 3 consoles each doing well, unlike last generation where there were 4 consoles, 1 died, 2 had very low user bases, and 1 (the PS2) dominated like crazy.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.
