Forums - Gaming - The Wii isnt competing with next gen consoles, its competing with last gen

Comparing the Wii with the 360/PS3 is like comparing a CRT tv with an LCD tv or a portable radio with an MP3 player.

Comapring Wii to PS3/X360 is like comparing a vanilla ice cream cone to a triple layer chocalate cake.

Prefence is more the key differential factor between the two, not just incremental technology.   The chocalate cake may be fancier, but I prefer vanilla.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

its so stupid when people try to say they are not competing .....its like saying the discovery channel is not competing for viewers with mtv......different audiences but they still want you on their channel and not another one

Wii stinks yea yea yea, I've heard it a billion times before. Every Wii game sucks, only my grandma plays it, my friend stopped after 46 seconds, PS2 ports are all thats available. Graphix=Hardcore, Wii=Kiddie. PS360 have megaton graphics that revolutionize, Wii isn't strong enough to run Sega Saturn games at low-resolution........ I'm sick of hearing all this stuff. OK, GTA got a 10, OOT sucked. ENOUGH. There a 4 threads a day bashing something Wii-related. I may drop the occasional PS3 grill joke or Xbox 3 fix me but not to the point of pure ignorance. Be fair when posting on a system topic.

You want me to say MGS4 will blow? No, I won't cause fanboyism can only go so far. The Wii is currently winning. GET OVER IT! My Goodness, find a GTA4 or Shoot SoandSo topic somewhere else to rave on.

So if someone preferred black and white to colour television, that is a valid comparison? They are both next gen? Consoles aren't any different to other technology.

Not, I'm saying the two are different based on more than just an increment in technology such as your analogy was.

My analogy suggests it's far more a preference in gameplay and games that separates the two.

Most people seem to find it hard to understand that Wii is just a different branch moving forward on the same tree as PS3/X360. This generation is a "Y" with Wii tacking one path and PS3/X360 taking the other both moving forward in their own way. It's a matter of preference that decides which path each gamer will take.

The three consoles are next-gent, well so far current gen, tech doesn't define a gen, a gen is defined by the life time of the consoles launched in a similar time frame (until the next iteration appears)...

I don't care about that, the question was whether they can be compared. Would anyone in their right mind try to compare a CRT tv that came out at the same time as a Plasma tv?

Umm ... They did it for a decade.

HD-CRT TVs were compared directly to their plasma TV counterparts, and reviewers generally pointed out that these CRT TVs were higher quality and less expensive than their plasma TV counterparts; this is (of course) before all the major TV manufacturers (virtually) abandoned CRT TVs

In your first sentence you ask us to think and then you cease to do so yourself. Plain and simple the economics of the situation are clear. People who own a Wii buy Wii games...and money spent on a Wii and Wii games is the same type of income (ie disposable income) that is spent on PS3 and 360 games. So what you have is gamers...buying games from all the consoles ...using the money from the same source....so what do you have??? COMPETITION! Each console competes for the cash in every gamer's wallet, they are competing for the same $$$ and thus they are competing. I'm glad we thought about it and came to the right conclusion....don't feel bad you had the right idea just needed better follow through.

The problem with this is that you do not distinguish direct and indirect competition. If I eat out at Taco Bell so much I don't have spare change left over to buy a video game, does that prove that Taco Bell is competing with Nintendo? In the sense that all products/services are competing with each other for money, yes. However, Taco Bell is not in direct competition with Nintendo.

I'm not saying they're not in direct competition (they most certainly are), but the argument that all the money for them comes from the same source so they're in direct competition is a bad one.

I think you missed that, and no I didn't go out of my way to differentiate it.  But that had more to do with not feeling it worthy of the effort in this case.

Disposable income is not Taco Bell money, thats is filed under "Essentials - Food".
