Forums - Gaming - Is GTA IV being hailed because its not Nintendo

there's nothing wrong with the wii, but nintendo's decision to skip HD quality is going to turn some devs away. also a large portion of people who buy the wii are not long time gamers. families are buying it for the party game aspect.

hardcore games just don't sell well on the wii and devs are very aware of this, therefore putting a game like that on the wii is a financial risk.

 lol!

What hardcore game that wasn't a port from the PS2 didn't sell well for the wii?   Everyone I can think of sold well.

I actually see it the other way around...

Nintendo games get high scores because they have a nintendo logo on them.

I rented smash brothers when I heard the reveiws. I never liked the older ones (which mostly averaged a 6.5/10 in reviews) but when I heard it has over 9 I thought maybe they got this right...nope, still the same crappy game.

And as far as mario Kart...I am in shock people are liking this game this much. Its a 3 hour gaming experience. I beat everything in 3 hours which weren't that fun at all. If nintendo had a decent online, I'd try it online but otherwise its a 7 out of 10 for me and thats being generous.

Nintendo once used to be truly great and on top of their game. But these days they get the one blind eye treatment every time because the games run on a less powerful console and because everyone has a boner for Mario. If a nintendo game does 480p and widescreen it automatically gets "looks nice...9 out of 10 for graphics" If a ps3 game does this it would get a 4...

As far as GTA4 is concerned, it is not a perfect game or a 10/10. But a game like this takes more effort, planning, people and money to produce than 5 of the best nintendo wii games. And when it comes together as good as it does in GTA4, the reviewers have no choice but to give it 10/10.

It deserves the ratings, just accept it.

The problem with GTA4, is it has "Grand Theft Auto" in its title. If it was a totally new IP, it would be getting the same reviews, and less flack.

Then again, if it was a new IP, they would not have spent 100 million making it.

First off, if you're going to lie at least make up ones which are not easily demonstrated as lies:

Title
Platform
Avg. Ratio
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Publisher: Nintendo
Number of P/Reviews: 199
Wii 93.9%
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Publisher: Nintendo
Number of P/Reviews: 105
GameCube 89.8%
Super Smash Bros.
Publisher: Nintendo
Number of P/Reviews: 14
Nintendo 64 80.2%

On top of that maybe the games are just not for you ...

No one is saying that Grand Theft Auto 4 isn't a fantastic game but if you read the reviews there seems to be this underlying tone of the reviewer looking for an excuse to give it a higher or "perfect" score. This doesn't (necessarily) mean that all reviewers are doing this because they're anti-Wii, or because they were bought off, but when your reader reviews on Gamerankings are 7.6 and 8.0 you might think that someone would give it a 9 out of 10 ...

I think there is some bias by reviewers. When it looked like SMG was going to take the top spot, some low scores came out to keep it from happening, etc... A few probably see this as the best chance to get something for the 360 or PS3 into the top spot, and decided to boost the score all the way to the max.

That said, there are enough honest revewiers out there that it might be getting an artificial boost, and some nintendo games getting an artifical lower, but I am sure it averages out to less than one point.

wow, are you serious? I buy the advertisement theory more than this one. These reviewers dont worry about this stuff.

I am serious, but....  figure only 10% of reviewers would bias their scores that way.  Wouldn't call it a conspiracy, just their personal desire for high-def to rule the market over controls.  It's a great game no matter how you look at it, and although it may have a slight impact on it's place in the charts, it will not be enough to make much difference.  I mean, if a game has a 99 or 92, I will be about as likely to get it.

I believe it can be plausible that GTAIV scores are a bit inflated to take away the spotlight from the Wii. Here are the reason I think it is plausible:

1. this is all happening right after an "anti-wii" week
2. the praise seems to be coming from ps3/xbox biased sites

This is all speculation and opinion, and since I haven't played any GTA game, it could be that GTAIV is indeed a perfect game.

"the truth is out there" ;)

Ask the average gamer, IGN is definitely not a Nintendo-hating site, and they were one of the first reviewers to give it a 10.

Anywho, maybe it's just a good game. Mario Galaxy had repetitive levels, a horrid camera, and lacking multiplayer. See how I could make complaints that aren't exactly false? The difference is that the Grand Theft Auto 4 bugs can actually be fixed.

I have not played a GTA game, ever, even though I do own XBox Classic. I do not own a 360 or a PS3, and don't know that I will ever play GTA4. I am also a die hard Nintendo loyalist, and just love my Wii.

Suffice it to say my opinion on this matter is seriously uninformed and biased...

There is little reason to believe that people are rating GTA4 highly because of the Wii. If that was the case, Lair and Heavenly Sword would have had spiked ratings as well.

GTA3/SA/VC were all highly regarded, well loved games. There is little reason to believe that this version, a bigger, better, prettier version of this series would not also garner rave reviews.

The anticipation for GTA4 has been building for years, and it has landed amidst an ocean of hype not seen since.... last October. If the ratings are inflated, this would be the reason why. Immediate emotional experience overriding better judgement.

If the game has flaws, consistent flaws being found by reviewers and gamers alike, then it may not be deserving of perfect 10's. But this is not a truth that can be revealed now. It will only come in the fullness of time, when the hype has died down, and everyone has played it to death and moved on to the next Best Thing Ever. Then maybe - MAYBE- clearer heads will think back and decide to revise those score. Or not.

In the end TLoZ: TOoT has held the mantle of "Best Game EVAR!" for over a decade now. That's roughly 25% of the life of the industry. It survived 2 console generations and will still be played and revered for another decade.

Of course, if we were going to be COMPLETELY honest, we would have to note that TLOZ:TOoT, while deserving it's high score, likely also benefitted from Nintendo Fanboy Grade Inflation as well, so to make it out that GTA4 doesn't deserve it's score, but TOoT was rated in only the most pure, empirically sound methods is horse pucky.

Yes appears I was wrong with Smash brothers...I didn't do research or intend to "lie" but I remember seeing a few reveiws for the N64 one and I based my statement around that. So my bad there...I don't understand thehigh reviews but thats me.

In any case, maybe those games are not for me...and GTA4 is not my type of game either. But no one can deny that effort that went in to GTA4 is atleast 5 times greater than effort that went in to a game like Mario Kart Wii... I actually didn't even buy GTA4...my roomate rented it so I am no spokesperson for GTA series what so ever.

As far as the topic is concerned, I can see the reveiwers pumping the score a bit in trying to push back the casual gaming invasion which nintendo is solely profiting off but I doubt it. I believe GTA4 deserves a 9/10 myself...but if this gets 9...mario kart gets a 5.

I have played GTA4 for about 8hours and i'm under 14% complete and i have not played it online yet but i would give the game a near perfect score, the game is just stacked to the top with things to do, so far the story has been great too.

But this GTA game suffers from the GTA bug problems, just like all the others, it does not look the best or have the best controls or camera, but what it brings to the table is something that no other game can come close too. Kinda like what the wii fans say about Mk, Brawl and SMG.
