Did a really popular shooter like Gears of War push people over from the Wii? Not that I can see.
Did a really really popular shooter like Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 push people over from the Wii? Again, not noticably.
What about a really really really popular shooter? I guess we'll see, but I doubt it.
It would be like getting in a fight with a giant.
What if you punch him really hard? No effect.
Okay, how about really really hard? No effect.
At that point, I suppose you can try to punch him really really really hard, but it's probably better to just think up a new strategy altogether.

No single game has ever determined a console's future. Not even droves of good games have significant impact. In fact, due to the ultimate enemy of video gaming at large (disinterest/gamer drift), the best any given game can do is briefly boost attention towards a system. How long that boost lasts depends on a great deal of factors (particularly if it's a pack-in which showcases a system's capabilities; those tend to act as small-but-significant attention holders for the entirety of the console's lifespan).
GTA4 is a hyped game, make no mistake. It is a system seller of a sort. But it is hyped towards the existing core gaming demographic; to the mainstream, it's the embodiment of everything that's wrong with video games. Meaning its lasting impact is severely limited, given that the mainstream makes up the majority of system owners. On top of it not being a system feature showcasing game or a pack-in, all it has pushing its sales and the sales of systems is that aforementioned hype. And as Halo 3 demonstrated only half a year ago, hype alone isn't enough to allow a game to give a system a permanent edge against disinterest and gamer drift.
Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

As a Wii owner, I can confidently say that GTA IV is just GTA III with the last two "I"s duck taped together.

Since III, VC, and SA skipped the GC (and only SA was justified, due to size), it would be better to see how those would do on the Wii. They would likely sell better than Bully (although 170k is pretty good), especially if they were either given a facelift or sold at a bargain price.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

This is actually a great idea. Wii owners would finally get a decent adult game and rockstar would make lots of money...

Well it has a couple already (if GTA counts, then so does RE4), but it would be a good way to earn a bit of money, especially with helping Take Two's stock.
Althought what I personally would like to see would be a trilogy consisting of III bundled with LCS, VC bundled with VCS, and SA bundled with a new game, of course San Andreas stories (it couldn't be on the PSP, because SA was twice the size of a UMD).

What's with this rediculous GTA bashing? I'm a big Nintendo fan, and I think the series is amazing. GTA San Andreas in particular was superb. I think there is a lot of resentment among Nintendo fans that maybe the best game of this generation will not be on a Nintendo console. I'm glad I'm not part of that rediculous fanboyism. GTAIV isn't going to make me run out and get a PS3 or 360 right away, but sooner or later I will get one of those systems, and GTA IV will be one of my first games on it.
