Forums - Gaming - Square-Enix has really been on a roll as of late

Yes I agree....FF7:CC was very well recieved & we can see how well "The world Ends With You" is doing

Believe it or not I feel FFXIII could be almost as huge as FFVII in terms of an impact..

Square has always been pretty much my favorite; i've never really considered them in a slump. More that SNES/PS1 was a golden age. Though this seems to be a second coming.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

I stopped caring for stuff they made after FF7.. though DQ8, FF12, and The World Ends With You are all very enjoyable, so maybe they'll continue to put out stuff I have fun with.   I haven't tried Crisis Core yet, but a best friend of mine loves it, and I've been considering getting a PSP anyways.. so we'll see!

Square Enix reminds me of Sega because when they aren't butchering their franchises people post that they're back to their old form ...

Personally, I think Square Enix should have a two year break from all things Final Fantasy; after they have made a few games that aren't called Final Fantasy or involve characters from Final Fantasy they will (probably) have a much better perspective on the series.

I wouldn´t call FFXII: RV a great game, nowhere near that. But me, as a fan of Ivalice played it of course. Eventually a remake of FFVII will come true, but the right time (assemble the original team) and experience with next-gen consoles is needed.

I do agree that SE is on a roll. The original Squaresoft always produced first class games, but had a rather bad international marketing. Enix was always publishing good games in Japan, but never succeeded internationally. When these 2 companies merged together things started to go bad, as many veterans left and the new company was mainly focused on making quick cash-ins rather than good games. Right now SE has found a good balance between quality, quantity and mass-marketing and its in-house and external studios have risen dramatically in quality, but also in numbers as well.

 Actually, what happened was Square made The Spirits Within and lost 100 million dollars on it.  That put Sakaguchi in the dog house at Square and because they weren't big enough to take such a loss they sold off part of their business to Sony and then merged with Enix.  Sakaguchi decided to leave rather than work on nothing projects while being in the dog house.  That $100 million loss caused FF11 to become an MMO to get the monthly revenue and since it was rumored to have around 1 million paying customers at its peak, it did just that.  Also because of the losses from the movie they decided to make FFX-2 because they would be able to reuse a lot of stuff from FFX.  I realize lots of people didn't like that game, but I haven't met one in real life.  All the spin offs we have seen from there are probably because FFX-2 sold so well, as do most of the spin offs.  If people will keep buying it, it would be bad business to stop making them.

@HappySquirel

but why the general response to EVERY SINGLE MAIN FF critically has been 90%+ & they have sold 5 million + since PS1 era

not only this but they successfully made their first non-crappy FF7 spin-off...

they are definetely back in form

 FF11 was always meant to be an MMO and was being planned before The Spirits Within bombed.  Square and enix merged because Square was going to go bankrupt while enix were publishing Star Ocean 3 which was not only one of the biggest JRPGs in Japan at the time but the game itself cost a lot of money to make

Yes yes, I know about all that.

Spin-offs, remakes and FFs aside, SE developed and published games are actually good. They are practically (recent exception is Dawn of Mana, yuck) always very good reviewed. The difference with the old Squaresoft is that they don´t reach the status of "legendary" yet. Spin-offs turn out bad most of the times, however remakes and ports are always a hit for me, as they stay true to the original and enrich it.

Ah yes, Sigma Harmonics! That mystery/puzle-solving-RPG mix that was announced some time ago. It looks really promising. Most likely it will turn out a hit like TWEWY.
