Forums - General - Is Artificial Intelligence the Death of Art?

Photography wasn't the end of art either, sure diminished painting landscapes / portraits though. But now photography is considered art as well. True artists will be able to use AI to express emotions, just as photographers can. However it will be infinitely easier to copy / plagiarize existing (digital) art.

So far AI can't hold a paint brush and robots dancing looks creepy as fuck.

If anything, photography pushed art to evolve. It might be that if we didn’t get photography we’d have never got Monet, and all his successors (including the entire impressionist, post-impressionist movements which gave us artists like Van Gogh, expressionism, and many other modern art forms like abstract). And while realism was considered to be the obvious causality, that didn’t happen either, realism persists, even if it lost its prominence.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

It also made realism art easier. Rather than setting up an easel somewhere and paint or have someone sit still for hours, painting from a picture is both easier and faster. You can project the picture onto canvas and make a rough pencil sketch tracing the projection. Then fill it in in your own style with chosen paint.

AI can make the base picture, but painting it is still in the hand of the artist.

AI wasn't involved here but my wife used that projection technique to make this oil painting for me, of which I cropped my avatar.

Art is about 'copying' what you see and feel after all. AI can do the visual part, yet putting feeling in the brush strokes / using different techniques and materials to set the mood, the texture of the paint and the canvas, dunno if AI can do that in the future.

I don't know about AI books or music. The best of books and music are those that can make you feel. No doubt AI stories can be entertaining, and create pleasing music, but can it evoke deep emotions?
