Forums - Gaming - What is your list of shame?

We all have our backlogs of games we want to get to, but since time is limited, and life has other important things, we never get to play everything we want. But sometimes I find myself looking at my backlog, or at some game magazines ”best of” lists and I see titles I am kind of embarrassed I haven’t played yet. Either because they look exactly like the kind of game I would love, or they are almost universally considered among the finest games ever, or they have incredible historical importance.

So what are those games for you? I don’t want to set specific criteria, if you want to go by metacritic, this sites annual top list or just whatever game you strongly believe you would love but haven’t gotten to, it is up to you.

I will post my own list in a bit and will try to limit myself to 10 games.

Around the Network

Sometimes I get a heavily discounted bundle on Steam and maybe only play a couple games from it. So I’ve got all those ancient D&D games that I haven’t touched, pretty much all the Star Wars games even though I was only looking at X-Wing/TIE Fighter/Dark Forces, an anthology of Tomb Raider games just for the really new ones, and I keep getting tempted to buy up the Resident Evil franchise even though my only experience with it is watching someone play Code Veronica X on the PS2.

For almost 30 years I discarded handheld gaming. I could not fathom why to pay $$ for a handheld game when for a the same or little more $$$ I could get a higher quality game on a home console.

This is the reason I never owned a Nintendo handheld, while owning all of their home consoles (except Wii U).

But damn with the Switch I was proven wrong. Not just about the joy of playing handheld, but also because thanks to NSO I started playing Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games. Plenty are really good.

In retrospective I'm a bit ashamed to have looked down on handheld gaming for so long.

Here are the 10 games I am the most ashamed of not having played through:

Fallout New Vegas

You could probably also add Fallout 3, I haven’t touched the series. New Vegas seems to be the one fans celebrate. It looks really cool, so even if I am not the biggest RPG fan, I would probably enjoy this.

Mass Effect 2

Another western RPG classic. Again I haven’t touched the series. It annoys me that I basicly have to play through the first one to start what is considered the most essential title. Maybe I’ll get to it some day.

Final Fantasy VII

This one I am not sure I will ever make it through. I have even tried twice. JRPGs are not exactly my comfort games, and they take so long, but this is so important I have to push myself through. I finally beat FFVI this year, so anything is possible I guess.

Final Fantasy X

Same as FFVII, I also tried this one and got quite far, until something else caught my interest. After a rough start I actually started appreciating the game more as it got along. I am more comfortable that I will make it through this one some day than VII.

God of War (2018)

Another game I tried multiple times, but quit for whatever reason, there is a lot to admire here, but I guess I struggled getting over the fact that it isn’t like the old games.

Uncharted 2

Yet another game I tried but never made it through. I love The Last of Us, so this should in principle be for me, I guess.

The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask

The only big classic Zelda game I never played through. The time mechanic is intimidating to me, hence I never tried, but I am a big fan of the series and the game seems so fascinating, so have to give it a go.

Chrono Trigger

Another JRPG. Even if I don’t love the genre, there are just some games you cannot avoid right?

Silent Hill 2

This is mostly embarrassing because I played the remake, which is probably my favorite or second favorite game of this decade, I cannot believe I didn’t play the original yet.

Metroid Prime

I played Super Metroid, I even played Metroid Prime 3: Corruption back in the day, but for whatever reason I never played Metroid Prime.

Big Nintendo fan, but never played the original Legend of Zelda or Metroid cos I grew up after the NES era and find it hard to go back to.
