Forums - Gaming - What's up with the Mario Party 8 scores?

It's gotten hammered by like every review site:

Gamespot: 6.5/10

1up.com: 5.5/10

ign: 5.2/10

The highest rating I've seen was on Nintendo Power: 7.5/10

So anyone have it yet? Any opinions? I'm supposed to get this in the mail soon from Gamefly.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Either the game is just that bad or the wii hype is starting to ware of. Ign scored a tech demo like wii play higher.

Not really sure... IGN seem pissed that the game is too similiar to the GC games? And that the Wii controls could be better (for some of the mini-games). Looking at the screens/vids, I thought the gfx were excellent.

I have missed 4 MP's in a row - so I'll definitely get this one. Need a MP for the Wii anyway...

Be more than curious to hear your opinions on the game. But next years version may well be the definitive version (a lot more polish, better gfx, more Wii integration, maybe Mii's... and hopefully online play).

They're already planning another next year? Anyway, I've actually never played one of the Mario Party games before so this is my first. It would have been more exciting if there weren't so many other mini game collections on the Wii, but I didn't get any of the others (except warioware) so this might be a purchase if it's good enough.

I missed all the GC games...so I think the staleness doesn't affect me as much...

I played 3 hours of this with my friends tonight...we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  The mini games were pretty fun, and the boards were varied enough.  We enjoyed calling each other bastards for getting bonus stars, running each other over, or screwing over each other in mini games...I'm surprised it got such low ratings...though I guess it's not much different than the GC games?

My friends didn't like Wario Ware too much, they thought it was too weird...they liked this game though, so we had a good time.  The lack of widescreen ingame was weird, but not that bad...it's not going to win any graphics awards, but it didn't matter to us really...some water effects were cool though.  I'd recommend a rental for sure, if not a buy.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Not confirmed, but I'm sure they are. The MP franchise has almost turned into Madden - it keeps selling year, upon year - with slight incremental changes.

As I mentioned, I have MP4 - and we played this to death. It almost got more playtime in our house, than any other game I had. Friends come from interstate, and still ask to play this.

Its much more than a mini-game collection. The levels (boards) actually have a lot of strategy, luck and fun in themselves - and really make the game (IMO). The game is also a little like Mario Kart, in that its 20% skill and 80% luck. This makes it popular with non-gamers, as they actually feel (and they do) have a fighting chance of winning.

Its also very clever the way it pits players against each other. With 4 people playing, its not necessarily 1-1 -1-1 competitive... you get 3-1 matches, 2-2 matches, 1-1 matches... and other combinations. Part of the reason why its so much more fun with people than it is with the AI alone.

WarioWare hasn't had any real gametime in our house at all... but I'm sure this would. Its also a great "drinking" game (wish Nintendo would have the balls to actually include a "drinking" mode within the game ;).

Interesting comments, thanks shams and BenKenobi88, looks like I'm gonna have to invite some people over and try this out when I get it.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

All of the Mario Party 8 games got low reviews. But hey, either Mario Party, or Sonic Shuffle, or Crash Bash... Yeah, now Mario Party seems good.

I loved Mario Party 1 & 2 and also had some fun with 4 & 5 (I also own 3 & 6) but I think the games have become too complicated (not for me of course, but for the people I play with, my parents for example) and therefore one game is too long. I would wish that Nintendo stops rushing the games out every year and would make only one version per console instead, but one that is great. A problem also is that if a new game comes out every year, you don't really have time to get used to the mini games of the old one. this usually means that the gamers are better than the non-gamers, because they know faster what they have to do.

For the score: I think you shouldn't care too much, they are usually a little low for Multiplayer games.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

I am amazed they've made 8 of them so far. I remember MP1 on N64. Dang, thats a long time ago! Either way, MP will probably average around 78-80% once everythings said and done. Most uber-franchises that have that many itenerations end up getting stale in the reviewer's eyes, and therefore get bad scores. Madden has been degrading in scoring lately, so theres no suprise other perennial favorites are getting hit as well. Halo 10 gets a 65% rating?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
