See Master thread for links to other countries threads and poll, read rules, and tell me which country should receive a thread next:
https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread/249268/master-thread-favorite-games-from-different-countries/
A year ago I started a series of threads about the best games developed by 15 different countries, covering some big industries (Sweden, Poland) and some smaller ones too (Croatia, Norway). Being busy with other stuff and losing inspiration (let’s be real, a lot of countries don’t have the most exciting game industries), I abandoned the project a few months later. My poll for Croatia only got 3 votes, so I felt I had perhaps covered the major nations at that point. It does take a fair bit of work digging into the development information about some games, as there is not a solid database to pull from. Many games are co-productions between studios from more countries, and some studios even have divisions in different countries. It is therefore difficult to evaluate which games qualify - as I cover in the master thread, I am trying to stick with games that appear to be at least 50 % the creation of the country of the topic.
Anyway, I am planning to resurrect this series, with a handful of countries. Already I have done the research for three nations, and I think at least another two will be possible.
The comeback thread is dedicated to Austria, as I feel it at least has two heavy-hitters and a respectable list of cult classics. Most importantly it also has some studios that are worth writing about.
So once again, please vote and write your favorite Austriam game, remind me of important omissions and correct any mistakes I may have made.
Some notable Austrian developers and their games:
Moon Studios
This has become a major indie studio, and Austria’s claim to fame in the game industry in recent decades. Mostly known for their partnership with Microsoft, which has published the developer’s two most prominent games - Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. In a generation that was rough for Xbox, these titles stand as the most celebrated first (or rather second) party offerings. The games also came to Windows and Switch. I know these two metroidvania titles are very popular on this site, so I wouldn’t be surprise if it will end up as a battle between these two. Their latest game the much more ambitious RPG, No Rest for the Wicked has had a convoluted history, it is technically still not finished or fully released, being available in early access for two years now, with content being gradually added. The choice of release strategy has not helped the game a lot even if I hear the product seems promising.
Notable games:
Ori and the Blind Forest
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
No Rest for the Wicked
Max Design
While defunct since 2004, Max Design still lives on in spirit, as their construction and management sim series “Anno” lives on to this day, still getting new releases (made by different studios). It all started here at Max Design though, who developed the two first titles in the Anno series.
Notable games:
Anno 1602
Anno 1503
Neo Software Produktions GmbH / Rockstar Vienna
Another old-school studio, that no longer exists, Neo Software Produktions date all the way back to the Amiga days with adventure games like The Clue! One of their big successes at least domestically was Alien Nations, heavily inspired by Anno and The Settlers, but with its own setting and mechanics. Their strong releases caught the eyes of Rockstar, who acquired the studio and turned it into Rockstar Vienna. Likely their best selling and most played work were the Xbox ports of GTA III and GTA Vice City. They were finally given a chance of an original game under Rockstar with Manhunt 2, unfortunately the studio was closed by Rockstar late in the development cycle, and the development continued at other divisions. Despite having worked on the game for two years and undeniably having done the bulk of the development work of the game (according to credible sources related to the studio), none of the developers from Rockstar Vienna received any credit. They will get the credit in this thread though.
Notable games:
Whale's Voyage
The Clue!
Rent-a-Hero
Alien Nations
Manhunt 2
ClockWork
This little Austrian studio received a decent amount of mainstream success for their simulation series Bridge Constructor. Several spin-offs have been released since, particularly noteworthy is the Valve licensed Bridge Constructor Portal, being a cross-over with the Portal series.

The Nations
Cursed Mountain
