Forums - Gaming - Games you love with sequels you hate.

This is such a difficult thread, because such sequels are usually something we don't really want to remember. Anyway.

Crysis. I don't remember everything that made the second game bad, but I'm thinking it was the (too) distinct setting, removed freedom, poor enemy AI, and animations during which enemies were (or at least seemed) invulnerable (mainly ladders, I think). I'm more interested in the third game than in the second, but after the terrible second game, I still haven't actually wanted to try the third one enough.

Final Fantasy X-2 was also just mentioned, and I couldn't agree more. I can forgive a lot about the game, but the changes to the characters were simply poorly written, and besides the main hook of the story, the story was a huge letdown if I recall correctly.

World of Warcraft Cataclysm. I somehow still played throughout due to WoW addiction. but this was a very bad expansion.

World of Warcraft Warlords of Draenor. They somehow made an even worse expansion than Cataclysm, and thus put the nail in the coffin for my retail WoW playing days.

Even in December 2025, I am still playing WoW, so clearly I love the game, but the expansions I definitely hate and refuse to play.

Might be more niche but fable 1, I liked it, the humor and mechanics were all very fun. Fable 3 was really lacking in both content and humor. Never played 2 becouse I don't own an Xbox.
Also as someone else mentioned Hollow knight is more enjoyable and feels more fair? Then it's successor silksong. The exploration rewards also feel more lacking compared to 1.

The world belongs to you-Pan America

I liked Bioshock 1. For Bioshock 2, hate is a strong word, but I can't foresee ever playing it again.
I loved Fire Emblem Three Houses (and to a lesser extent the 3DS entries) but hated Engage.
I loved Super Mario World, but could never get into Yoshi's Island.
I loved Banjo Kazooie, didn't like Tooie very much, but loved Nuts and Bolts. Fight me.

Uncharted 2 is really good while 3 ...zzzzzz.

Initially I didn't like Jak 2 nor Bioshock 2, yet playing them later they were actually very good.

I couldn't get through Jak 2 on PS2, yet when I played the remastered collection on PS3 I went through all 3 and enjoyed 2 a lot. It's a good challenge plus the city grew on me during the game. Jak 3 I remember the least off, was good but the series was definitely on a downward slope.

Bioshock 2 I ended up liking more than Bioshock 3. Great level design and much more fun gameplay.

Sequels I disliked and still do are Mass Effect 2 (and likely 3, skipped it) Dragon Age 2, Dead Space 2. 3 series that went in a different direction than what I liked in the originals.

Sequels I hate, hmm Silent Hill Homecoming. Bought it, played it for an hour or two and it put me to sleep ugh.

Also SM64. Hated the camera, never finished the game. I actually enjoyed sunshine more :/

Breath of the Wild to Tears of the Kingdom was depressing.

Didn't think I'd ever see someone who thought that way too, I couldn't get into Mass Effect 2 either, tried it many times and never got going. I wouldn't say I "hate" it though.

Depressing initially, so much that I went into the Depths and didn't come back out until I had explored the whole underground lol.

However the game did grow on me despite the false promises of better dungeons and disappointing sky world. The map was still great for the new side quest lines. Main quest was a mess.
