Forums - Politics - Persecution by the religious

There hasn't been enough criticism of religions for me.... next we will talk about the persecution of the broader pagan religions, including what they call the "burning times" when witches were burned at the stake.  They dislike Christians especially because of their heavy handed ways, and how Christians always have to be right about moral matters, and when you get away from Christianity in the west, everyone becomes much less dogmatic.

Anyway, here's some fun historical stuff about that not so gentle prophet, and his favorite wife (Aisha).

I hope you don’t mind me commenting, but it is very upsetting to see how badly religion has hurt you, shavenferret. :( As somebody who was saved by God, brought out of a world of heavy grief and pain, I pray that you may someday come to know God and understand those who kill in the name of God the Father (whether that be via burning at the stake like those in Salem) are not in Christ Jesus, but their father is another entity.

Again, I really hope it’s okay for me to comment this. My heart just aches seeing this thread too much not to say something. Mankind is evil. Don’t let the evil of man pervert the righteous agapē (love) of God.

lol.... ok a lot to unpack on this one.

Religion hasn't so much hurt me as that i believe it can be harmful when each belief grows too powerful and what always happens is that the religious think that they have to be right, and they also imposing their beliefs on others, even if it's for things like moral codes.  The oppression of women by christians in the west and muslims in the middle east is a prime example of this.

As far as my response to all of that here goes, i'm in quite good cheer, sir.

Please have a great day!

I agree with where you are getting at, but also have a different perspective. Consider the analogy: imagine a world where those in power start using video games as a justification or motivator for (let’s say…) war/ethnic cleansing. The problem then doesn’t become the video games, but the people in power.

That said, my belief is this: I don’t believe religion is the problem but the people in power who co-opt religion to justify ungodly actions.

Christianity, for instance, does not call for an aggressive crackdown on sin— in fact, we are called to do the exact opposite, to walk in freedom. See the epistle to the churches of Galatia, the epistle of freedom. Now, that is not to say “freedom to sin,” but that is to say if one truly believes in their heart that you must work (via stop being gay or submitting to an oppressive patriarchal force, for instance) to receive justification before God, then you have completely missed the whole point of the Gospel.

And, on the note of freedom, oppression against minorities justified by man through scripture is anything but freedom. We are not called to live according to formalities nor any imposed rules, but only to love thy neighbor as thyself. To prune our hearts of all the strife, ego, and hate which we posses, and to embrace providing for others in a totally selfless manner (i.e. to walk in an agapē manner). By Spirit and not by the flesh.

My two cents. Take em or leave em, ferret.

p.s. Thank you for not responding aggressively to my initial post btw. It’s hard to chat about faith without the other become extremely irate. You have my respect, ferret, I actually feel comfortable for a change.

Riiiiiiggghhhht, well i'm probably going to be seething mad very soon when i read the latest news.  I start jumping up and down at my home because i can't contain myself.

Seriously, it's quite fun to pretend to be so upset.  It's just a performance.  Look at Capt. Explosion's postings sometimes, he does the same thing and it always make me chuckle.
