Forums - General - This is probably a dumb thing to ask..

and I know there really isn't a good answer for this but.. is there anything a person can do to temporarily get your mind off a bad situation? I'm so depressed I can't function or live my life normally... I've been seeing somebody for over a year and we're living together and.. its ended and now theres nothing but awkward silence between us. It just feels like nothing will ever get better and I'll be stuck in this depression forever  and all of the things that I normally enjoy I just can't...

Like I've been looking forward to the release of Mario Kart since it was announced at E3 last year and its less than a week away.. and even that can't cheer me up. Sorry for rambling but I really needed to get some of this off my chest.

Joke Answer: Weed

Serious Answer: Excercise. Yeah, it sounds lame, but seriously. The 'runner's high' isn't a myth, and it's not just from runs. Your body releases endorphins that basically put you in a good mood, even if you're depressed.

Weightlifting, jogging, whatever. Start slow. As you improve, you'll suprise yourself, raise yourself esteem, and form a productive habit to boot.

If that's not your thing...you just need to find a cause/purpose. Yeah, that sounds like a Disney movie, but I'm serious. Whether it's to write a book you've always wanted to write, get the job you've always wanted, save up for a trip you've always wanted to make...as long as you have something to focus on, it can help a lot with depression.

That, and don't dwell on the past. That's the worst.

Also, blaring Techno usually shakes you out of a bad mood.

Find other things to enjoy for the time being that you did not do with that person.  Eventually time will heal the sad memories, but just find something you can enjoy in the meantime.  Video games, movies, sports...etc.  I like to go swimming when I want to just relax so maybe try that.  ^_^

Don't rely on videogames during depression, I would advise taking comfort in your religion or taking a week-long vacation full of beer drinking and sleeping.

Focus on personal growth, try to do stuff with friends, take your vitamins, and give it time. Also, you probably should stop living with that person. Being around someone all the time doesn't make it easy to get over them.

I'm pretty sure videogames are a much better alternative  than a week of beer drinking, though neither are very good ways to deal with depression.

Reread a favorite book you haven't read in a long time. For some reason that always helps me.

Well, what do you think makes you sleep so much?

When I was going through a rather hard time a few months ago, I would play Gutar Hero when I was down. You really can't focus on two things when you are playing that game, it is either 100% GH or 100% everything else, so it was a wonderful distraction.

A few years ago I fought a bout of depresion right after high school. During that time, I wrote a full screenplay (120+ pages). Sure it was awful, but it kept me sane ^_^

The trick really lies in finding whatever works for you, obviously no one here knows you better than you, so anything we say may not be what you need at this point in your life. Don't be afraid to share some of your pain with friends, after all it is what they are there for!
