Switch 2 Best-Seller as Sales Top 8M - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for August 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console worldwide with 1,112,719 units sold for August 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The Switch 2 has sold 8.16 million units lifetime.

The PlayStation 5 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 875,798 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 79.09 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 was the third best-selling console with an estimated 259,568 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 151.62 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 123,644 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 33.53 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the third month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 0.62 million units, as the Switch 1 sold 493,849 units in its third month worldwide in May 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are up by over 20,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 254,000 units. PS4 sold 855,409 units for the month of August 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 377,679 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 228,311 (-20.7%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 150,886 units (-55.0%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 426,339 units (-62.2%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by over 491,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 93,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by over 6,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are up by nearly 6,000.

2025 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 8.16 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 7.06 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 2.99 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.54 million units.

Switch 2 Remains Best-Seller - Americas Hardware Estimates for August 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in the Americas (USA, Canada, & Latin America) with 371,469 units sold for August 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The Switch 2 has sold 2.86 million units lifetime.

The PlayStation 5 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 203,299 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 31.58 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in third place with 71,768 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 20.41 million units. The Nintendo Switch was the fourth best-selling console with an estimated 54,429 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 57.17 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the second month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by over 178,000 units as the Switch 1 sold 193,266 units in its second month in the Americas in May 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by over 31,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 146,000 units. PS4 sold 234,401 units for the month of August 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 217,665 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 111,256 (-35.4%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 96,637 units (-57.4%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 124,814 units (-69.6%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by over 173,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are down by nearly 21,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by nearly 7,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by nearly 30,000 units.

2025 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 2.86 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 2.44 million units, the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.00 million units, and the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.92 million units.

PS5 Outsells Switch 2 - Europe Hardware Estimates for August 2025

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in Europe with 273,627 units sold for August 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The PS5 has sold 27.06 million units in two months.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 235,187 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 1.77 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 was the third best-selling console with an estimated 80,914 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 39.11 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 38,356 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 8.59 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the third month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 0.08 million units as the Switch 1 sold 0.15 million units in its third month in Europe in May 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by nearly 75,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 61,000 units. PS4 sold 348,265 units for the month of August 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 98,906 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 24,094 (-8.1%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 35,303 units (-47.9%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 97,756 units (-54.7%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Switch 2 sales are down by nearly 108,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 26,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 2,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are up by less than 13,000.

2025 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 2.34 million units, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 1.77 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.68 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.37 million units.

Switch 2 Sells Over 250K as LT Nears 2M - Japan Hardware Estimates for August 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in Japan with 254,987 units sold for August 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The Nintendo Switch 2 has now sold an estimated 1.95 million units lifetime in Japan.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold an estimated 75,912 units to bring its lifetime sales to 36.00 million units. The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 31,895 units to bring its lifetime sales to 6.98 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 1,336 units to bring their lifetime sales to 0.68 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the third month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 0.12 million units as the Switch 1 sold 0.13 million units in Japan in May 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by nearly 57,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are up by over 800 units. PS4 sold 88,872 units for the month of August 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 500 units.

Nintendo Switch 1 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 157,939 units (-67.5%). PlayStation 5 sales are down by 80,391 (-71.6%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 4,145 units (-75.6%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by over 124,000 units, Nintendo Switch 1 sales are up by over 17,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 4,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 400 units.

2025 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold an estimated 1.95 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.94 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold 0.51 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.02 million units.

Relatively quiet month for Switch 2, without any big releases, plus the launch rush should be starting to end.

PS5 is down more YOY than Switch ONE? Two months after that system's been replaced?

Ouch.

Nintendo does dominate Japan. 

Oh I know that, but still, that's like a guy from an old folks home outpacing someone in their 30s.

A more than 50% drop YOY in the middle of a console's life is extraordinary, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that steeper than Xbox Series's YOY drops globally the past few years?

Yes, that is steeper than Xbox Series. Well excluding since the price went up. Xbox Series is down 37% YoY worldwide in 2025 through July.

After the price hike for the Series kicks in its gonna be a bloodbath, this time next year, the YOY drops for it will be brutal.
