Forums - General - US citizens NOT equal before the law

He committed three offenses for which he got three years prison. I don't see what the problem here is.

There have been TONS of cases where celebrities get better treatment and easier sentences...so I honestly don't care.

It's not like it's illegal...it's the maximum suggested term.
And that's wrong too. Your judicial system is an absolute joke if someone's job impacts upon their sentence. I'm surprised it doesn't bother you that the your country, the supposed leader of the free world, is unable to uphold the basic principle upon which all Western legal systems are based on - equality before the law.

Oh, I see now.

Foreigners don't get it.

she's from the UK

See in the UK they allow their stars to do whatever they want.....Kate Moss and Amy Whinehouse are documented druggies with proof and yet governement does nothing.

OP:  You people in the UK have balls critizing the US judicial system when yours is no better.

Ouch.  That's a bit harsh.

They should bump it up to 5 years just because of his awful performance in Blade 3.

I just saw "Chaos" with Jason Stratham and Wesley snipes. Good movie.
I think he's a decent actor.

wonder why he kept breaking the law. I don't get it.
Didn't read the article but is there an explanation for his actions?

They made an example of him. I'm not big on "making examples" in court when it comes to peoples lives, but there is nothing that can be done.

@everyone

He didn't pay his taxes. His tax guys told him the taxes were unconstituational. He knew better, but he still got what, 3 years in prison for it? Overkill. Nonviolent crimes like not paying taxes should be dealt with through fines and restrictions, maybe even probation, but certainly not 3 years hard time in a federal penal insitution.

You need to relax. You should know that judgements in both countries, ours and yours, are handed down by a judge or jury, and are often based upon an opinion of said judge or jury that they in turn attempt to base upon the law.

To cherrypick this one case, and call our whole legal system a joke, is insulting and frankly, uninformed and spiteful. Hate America all you want, but keep in mind that there can be a lot of similarities drawn between America-hating foriegners and Wii-hating fanboys, so keep it up. I'm making an experiment.

I thought everyone was supposed to be equal before the law? He should be treated exactly the same as anyone else.
Equality before the law is and idea but it has never happened.  The best thing to do would be to get rid of most of the laws so there are less cases of inequality :)  Oh, and get rid of the IRS, too!

This was the maximum allowed for tax fraud. Given the amount of money involved - BECAUSE he is rich and famous - it makes sense to me that he be given the maximum or close to it. Given that most often rich people could get out of jail time just by paying a bigger penalty, while others would serve a jail sentence because they couldn't, I do not hae a single problem with this whatsoever.

What's the problem? He failed to file his tax return 3 years in a row! He owed what, 17 million dollars?

That is a major, MAJOR case of tax offense. The maximum sentence makes a lot of sense for such an offense regardless of who he is.
