Forums - Gaming Discussion - 20 Exclusives for the PS3 this year- Yes, I am copying mrstickball (Long)

So I read mrstickball's very well written post and enjoyed it thoroughly, thus I decided to make my own post to point out the exclusives on the most battered and beleaguered system out there today: the PS3. So I'm not here to try and tell you that the price isn't hight or that you need Blu Ray in your gaming console, but just to point out the good, the great and the amazing (to me at least):

PS: I'm going to get all videos and screens from 1up.com so that will clear up where I am getting them from.

1. Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction (Fall-Winter 2007)

The next gen sequel to the series with arguably the most recognizable mascot of the PS2 (Sony needs more of 'em). A relatively strong selling and popular series that mixes old school platforming with action by means of crazy and highly entertaining weapons and gadgets. This is the veritable return to the real roots of the Ratchet franchise after the direction Deadlocked took as the last ratchet game on the PS2 (going for a more FPS thing to mixed reactions). Inosmniac have said they are dropping all that and returning to the Ratchet basics and maybe as significantly bringing back the loveable robotic sidekick Clank.

Here are samples of the kind of gameplay to expect if you are not familiar with the series:

http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3157407&type=game&sec=VIDEOS

On the technical side of things, the game just looks amazing (none of this is CG, all in game):

2. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Fall-Winter 2007)

A brand spankin' new next gen IP by the Naughty Dog, the same guys that brought you the Jak series and the Crash Bandicoot series before that. Coming from those kinds of games to moving towards the realistic look and feel, it looks like they are really using some of power under the PS3's hood. The game looks like a mash up of Adventure platforming (think Tomb Raider), action (hand to hand combat) with some puzzle solving and 3rd person shooting (even comes with a Gears of War-ish cover system).

The game is definitely a hybrid and doesn't seem like it would be fair to corner it in one of those genres, recently it was shown at the Sony Gamer's Day and was to many the biggest deal at that event. Here, again some videos of the game in action (warning: you might be impressed...):

http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3150522&type=game&sec=VIDEOS

Another visual stunner, this game is shaping up to be one that can contend with the best looking games out there (once again these are in game):

The amazing thing is this game is still many months away from release (Expected November) and it's already looking like this.

3. Heavenly Sword (Late summer/Fall 2007)

An action game in the vein of God of War (sometimes referred to by people as goddess of war), it comes from Ninja Theory a studio that doesn't share the pedigree of Insomniac or Naughty Dog, but they seem to be making a really impressive game with this one. The most notable things about the game is that it has a female character as the main protagonist and she isn't portrayed as some kind of sextoy as is the case in too many games (I won't say they didn't make her appealing looking ). Second thing to note is it does incorporate those button minigames that have been made famous (or infamous) by now in God of War and Resident Evil 4, among others. Also, it isn't as gory as God of War (rated T) and the combat system seems pretty refined with three stances that change the way you fight. In addition to all that, there seems to be the same kind of vibe as in GoW where you pull off really incredible moves without too much effort but you also get much better and pull off even crazier stuff with more play. Seems like a very accessible game for beginners.

Here are the videos if you want to see what the game is like:

http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3140602&type=game&sec=VIDEOS

And here we go with the game in action if you don't feel like watching whole videos for whatever reason (you're missing out):

Keep your eye on that game.

4. Warhawk (Late Summer/Fall 2007)

Here is a downloadable game that is going to be multiplayer only. Now generally speaking downloadable games are either small affairs or old games revisited, but the PS3 seems to be going in a different direction with some of these projects such as Warhawk. Some of you might remember Warhawk from the old days on the PSX (1995) as an aircraft combat game. While the single player aspect of the game has been dropped, Incognito has decided to add a lot to the multiplayer, by making it a massive affair (32 on 32 action) and adding ground combat (vehicles and on foot). Most significantly perhaps is that Sony has already said this will not be priced as a full game because it is a multiplayer only experience. This basically makes the game a must buy for me. Think of the game as something akin to Battlefield 2 on the PC, except it's in 3rd person view and it isn't based in our time's reality.

5. Lair (July 31)

Unlike the previous games mentioned, this one is coming out soon and except for Harwak this seems to have the most extensive inclusion of the motion technology in the Sixaxis. Factor 5 is bringing their expertise in making air combat games to the world of dragons and the medieval (though fantastical). What can I say? I'm a sucker for dragons and this game looks to be the one with the most beautifully created dragons so far. Essentially, you are a dragonrider who participates and missions and accomplishes specific tasks to turn the tides of a war. The gameplay is an mix of air combat and action. The whole game isn't just you flying around and shootinf fireballs, but rather you do engage in close quarter combat with both other dragons (and their riders) and footsoldiers. The dragon on dragon combat looks to be one of this game's best qualities.

6. LittleBigPlanet (TBA 2007)

Here is something a little different from everything else so far. The meat of Little Big Planet is user created content, as in you create and then play the game. You customize the characters, create the levels to your liking and then enjoy playing them as you see fit. In addition, the game is really going to be community based. The way I see it, this can end up becoming a kind of youtube for videogames where people start making all kinds of levels (some elaborate, some simple) and then put 'em up for other gamers to download, play and comment on. The game can have a really lasting appeal if the level creation is spot on because there is literally infinite amount of content if people keep making it. In addition to all that, there is up to 4 player co-op play. The game is a side scrolling platformer at heart, should appeal to fans of platformers if you don't even decide to participate in creation.

7. Folklore (Fall/Winter 2007)

Previously known as Monster Kingdom, Folklore is a JRPG with a twist: you go around collecting the souls of the monsters and then preserve them to use in later combat. It looks like there are dozens upon dozens of different kinds of creatures to keep and use that fit for specific situations. Sounds kinda Pokemon-ish, not that it's a bad thing, I always wanted to see what it would look like to use the same concept in a more complex game with better visuals. The demo of this game is set to come out this friday on the Japanese PS network so more will be known about the game soon.

8. White Knight Story (Winter 07)

Another JRPG, this time from Level 5 (Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy among others). This looks to be a more traditional JRPG with the group of characters questing around and defeating enemies. It is not turn based, and encounters are not random. Really good looking game that looks very promising. Not too much is known about this game yet, but it is possible there will be new stuff at E3.

9. Ninja Gaiden Sigma (July 3)

I know a lot of people are going to say this is a remake of an Xbox game, but there is enough in it for any fan of the game to buy: new playable character and 3 new levels. Other than that, the visuals have really been upped to 720p and the game that looked great last gen now looks jaw droppingly good. In addition to those differences, expect new bosses and weapons as well. If you own a PS3 go pick up the demo for this it's out already.

10. Socom Confrontation (Fall 2007)

This game was shown for the first time at gamer's day and it looks like it's early in the process, even though it's coming out this fall. Confrontation like Warhawk is going to be a downloadable, multiplayer only game that focuses on big battles (32 vs 32) and team work. The series was one of the few games on the PS2 that was popular online and it looks like they are going in the same direction with this one. Besides this there is another Socom game in the works that is probably not going to be multiplayer only and is not gonna be a downloadable game.

11. Eye of Judgment (Fall 2007)

Out of all of the games I'm listing here, this is the weirdest and most original. The premise is you take a traditional card game (Magic: the gathering, Yugioh) add to it the PS eye (the PS3 camera coming out when the game is released) and a play mat. What you get is the ability to actually see your cards come alive right in fornt of you on screen and do battle. It's really pretty geeky, but you gotta admit it's something else from the usual. Personally, I'm not normally one to play card games, but I approac this game more as an RPG with really high tech around it. I gotta admit I am totally impressed by this thing.

12. Tekken 6

Fighting game, the next gen sequel to the tekken series that might be the most popular fighting series out there right now. So far this is still a PS3 exclusive and is coming out this year. I'm sure everyone knows how a fighting game works (2 opponents confront each other and one wins) so I won't explain much.

Screenshots (Early):

13. Motorstorm (Currently out)

An offroad racing game where you get to race with 8 different types of vehicles. Everything from bikes to trucks are involved in this all out race with massive amounts of crashes. What stands out about this game? The first thing that you'll notice how imrpessive the game looks, add to that downlodable content that's on the way and the way each vehicle type races differently from the rest means loads of fun. I'm not a fan of realistic racings sims, more of a Burnout and NFS kinda guy so I really like this game because it brings that to these off road vehicles. Warning: not an easy game later on.

14. Haze (Fall 2007)

Revealed recently by Ubisoft, and it's at leat a timed exclusive for the PS3 for now. What makes this game stand out? 4 players co-op campaign is one major factor, the other is the fact that you have the ability to puno yourself with a drug called Nectar that makes you go into a state where you are much more aware of oncoming attack and enemies in addition to boosting stats and capabilities.

15. Resistance: Fall of Man (Out now)

The big launch game for the PS3 and arguably one of the best launch games in a while. The game's got a really weird WW II meets alien like creatures story set in alternate history. The game has good campaign co op and really intense mutliplayer (20 on 20) with lagless dedicated servers have got to be appealing to the fps fans among you. If you get a PS3, at least try this one out.

16. Pain (TBA 2007)

Downloadable and budget title with one simple game mechanic: cause as much pain to your character as possible. The game scores you on the amount of pain you inflict on your guy by flinging him around using a giant slingshot. Downloadable content will be added to the game, and they are promising celebritires that you can shoot around at your discretion, also this game is really reliant on the humor and fun of the experience. This is pretty obvious from one of the gametypes called spank the monkey where you basically gotta fire your guy at a raving monkey's ass...

17. Home

Both a sims like game and PS3's answer to Xbox Live. This is going to be free for all PS3 owners and you can use it to join in the online multiplayer of PS3 games (a la Xbox live), customize your own character and apartment and socialize and enjoy differnet kinds of passtime activities with people online. Home is going to be really important for the future of PS3 and looks to trump one of Xbox's main advantages (a cohesive software program that links all the online games together).

18. LA Noire (TBA 2007)

A game that's going for the film noire detective story genre. It's basically an adventure/detective game from Rockstar that promises to be really good since Rockstar has never disappointed me yet (GTA series, Rockstar Table Tennis, Manhunt, Red Dead Revolver...).

Video (Trailers):

http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3148424&type=game&sec=VIDEOS

Couldn't find screenshots.

19. Time Crisis 4 (Fall 2007)

Essentially the arcade game series is coming to the PS3 and it's got a light gun announced for the PS3 around the same time. Light gun games are underrated and it looks like now they're coming back on the Wii and the PS3 (Wii has other exclusive light gun games).

Screenshots from the arcade version (PS3 version shouldn't be much different, but there aren't any PS3 screens so don't quote me on these):

20. Eight Days (2007) and Eyedentify (2007)

Action game that was initially shown as a demo for the PS3 and then expanded into a full action/3rd person shooter (Eight Days) and another making use of the eyetoy as a game element (Eyedentify). Not much is known about these two yet, but there is a lot of promise from the videos and screens that they are gonna be good. There might be new info at E3 about these.

Video for Eight Days (early and lookin' good):

Gonna go over 20 (technically I already did), but people mentioned these games that should be included if I wanted to talk about PS3 exclusives in general.

21. Hot Shots Golf 5 (TBA 2007)

The Hot Shots Golf series from Sony studios Japan has garnered a lot of popularity over in the home country of Sony and it is one of those casual-centric games that Sony is probably gonna aim to get more of in the next few years. I played the demo on the PS Network and found it pretty fun, a friend of mine who I never though would like it, actually enjoyed it more than me. It features your basic golf game with cutesie characters and animations. I hadn't played the last console version of the series, so I compared the graphics to see if it's really a next gen upgrade and there seems to be much improvement in this area (it won't blow you away graphically, but for its style it works very well).

22. Singstar PS3 (Q4 2007 in US/June in Europe)

Another series that's more popular outside the US than over here, Singstar on the PS2 really satisfied European audience's craving for a Karaoke machine in their gaming console (Who knew?). The next gen version comes with your standard 30 song tracklist, but there seems to be a shift towards maximizing use of the playstation network, hence the Singstore. You will be able to download the songs you wanna sing to (for a fee). Essentially it's itunes for karaoke on the PS3, each song is supposed to be priced the same as a song off of itunes. You will also upload your singing abilities to the PS network :)

Is it possible to edit every time your first post... So that all 20 games are in the first post otherwise we have to search whole this thread.
