Forums - Gaming - Survey shows age and gender stats of popular game series in Japan

Given the demographics of people playing single player console games, you have to take it as a given these days that the audience on average is 30 + year old millenials, rather than teens and kids (Who for the most part only plays live service games).

Given the overall ratio was 25% female, it's interesting that Zelda and Yakuza have a 40% female player base, significantly above average.

Splatoon's audience skewing significantly younger than other Nintendo IPs is also noteworthy.

Won't lie, the percentage female is overall higher than I thought.

Yeah Kirby being majority female surprised me; I knew the pink puffball was popular with girls, but not to extent they outnumber the boys.

I thought AC might have a higher female ratio but 75% female for AC when the overall ratio is 25% female is pretty crazy.

That means if you got an equal number of male and female Japanese gamers in a room the number of females that played AC would outnumber the number of males 9:1... of course that's nothing compared to Touken Rambu which would be 147:1..... lol.

Holy shit. Everyone is old! lol. What are the kids and teens playing, I wonder.

They are most likely not allowed to data track children.

Smartphone games, mostly.

I mean, I have a nephew who never had a console or a computer and tried to play a game on my Switch, namely Dragon Quest Builders. He couldn't even get out of the cave where you're starting the game. That was already too complicated for him, moving camera and character was simply too much. I then tried Super Mario Bros 3 on the NSO and that went slightly better, though he still lost all his lives in the first level.

Smartphone games are much more simplistic for the most part, so much so that kids who only grew up with them get confused with control schemes of modern or even older games. Also, they're designed to be much more gratifying and as a result, since console/PC games generally lack this, he got bored almost instantly because it lacks the gratification.

Only things he's playing on my Switch now are Snipperclips and Smash, where he's surprisingly adept considering the problems mentioned above.

What i find interesting is that 75/25 female split for Animal Crossing. That would mean that female gamers managed to make Animal Crossing New Horizons become the best selling game of all time in Japan.

Perhaps you should introduce him to Mario Kart World. Not much to knock-out mode. Steer kart, hold gas, throw items at people. Even if he sucks at it, he'll probably have fun. And with auto-steer on, it's less likely he'll go sightseeing lol You might even have some luck starting him in free roam, you know, to let him get familiar with the mechanics etc.

Kirby is predominantly loved by females over there ... Honestly, it checks out with the esthetics of the games.

But... I thought he was one tough cream puff?
