VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Switch 2 Sets Record With 5M Sold in 1st Month - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for June 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console worldwide with 5,011,250 units sold for June 2025, according to VGChartz estimates.

This is easily the biggest hardware launch in video game history. The previous biggest launch month was set by the PS5 with an estimated 2.76 million units sold in November 2020. It should be noted the first month for the PS5 was three weeks, while it was five weeks for the Switch 2. The PS5 sold 4.37 million units by the end of December 2020 (eight weeks) and the PS4 sold 4.45 million units by the end of December 2013 (eight weeks).

The PlayStation 5 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 916,703 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 77.26 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 was the third best-selling console with an estimated 316,250 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 151.01 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 157,326 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 33.27 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the first month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 2.68 million units as the Switch 1 sold 2.33 million units in its first month worldwide in March 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by nearly250,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 344,000 units. PS4 sold 1,166,203 units for the month of June 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 501,216 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 159,512 (-14.8%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 151,836 units (-49.1%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 449,823 units (-58.7%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 156,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by over 20,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by nearly 20,000.

2025 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 5.23 million units, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 5.01 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 2.38 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.28 million units.

Switch 2 Sets Record for Biggest Launch in Europe - Europe Hardware Estimates for June 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in Europe with 1,107,738 units sold for June 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. 

The PlayStation 5 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 315,982 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 26.46 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 was the third best-selling console with an estimated 60,535 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 38.94 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 39,602 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 8.50 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the first month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 0.45 million units as the Switch 1 sold 0.66 million units in its first month in Europe in March 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by over 91,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 61,000 units. PS4 sold 407,285 units for the month of June 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 100,366 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 42,396 (-11.8%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 33,387 units (-45.7%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 102,763 units (-62.9%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 38,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 4,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by nearly 25,000.

2025 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 1.73 million units, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 1.11 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.51 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.27 million units.

Switch 2 Sold Over 1.9M in Launch Month - Americas Hardware Estimates for June 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in the Americas (USA, Canada, & Latin America) with 1.91 million units sold for June 2025, according to VGChartz estimates.

The PlayStation 5 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 333,729 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 31.22 million units. The Nintendo Switch was the third best-selling console with an estimated 110,280 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 56.93 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 100,624 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 20.52 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the first month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 0.87 million units as the Switch 1 sold 1.04 million units in its first month in the Americas in March 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by nearly 110,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 227,000 units. PS4 sold 443,597 units for the month of June 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 327,960 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 33,672 (-9.2%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 99,330 units (-49.7%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 124,460 units (-53.0%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are up by nearly 64,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by over 14,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are up by over 22,000 units.

2025 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 2.00 million units, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 1.91 million units, the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.87 million units, and the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.75 million units.

Switch 2 Smashes Records in Japan - Japan Hardware Estimates for June 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in Japan with 1,717,047 units sold for June 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. This is the biggest launch month in the history of Japan.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold an estimated 75,795 units to bring its lifetime sales to 35.86 million units. The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 56,933 units to bring its lifetime sales to 6.92 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 1,684 units to bring their lifetime sales to 0.68 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the first month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 1.15 million units as the Switch 1 sold 0.56 million units in its first month in Japan in March 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by over 52,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 200 units. PS4 sold 109,119 units for the month of June 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 1,875 units.

Nintendo Switch 1 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 153,326 units (-66.9%). PlayStation 5 sales are down by 67,885 (-54.4%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 6,459 units (-79.3%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by nearly 23,000 units, the PlayStation 5 sales are up nearly 20,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by less than 1,000 units.

2025 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold an estimated 1,717,047 units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 805,994 units, the PlayStation 5 has sold 453,467 units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 21,786 units.

Thank you to the team for the hard work! It's nice to finally see figures for NSW2. Outstanding performance, can't wait to see Nintendo earnings that are due, if I am not mistaken, at this end of this month.

Nintendo earnings report comes out Friday, August 1 (https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/index.html). As usual we will do any necessary adjustments. We estimated My Nintendo Store sales, so hopefully we didn't overestimate that in Japan.

Circana (NPD) drops Wednesday, July 23, unless it gets delayed. So the plan is to at least have Americas estimates up that day and hopefully Europe as well.

Won't take long until Switch 2 gets over Dreamcast 2,25M sales in Japan.
