One thing's for sure, they punch way above their weight in graphics; Factor 5, Shinen, and Crytek all delivered results way above and beyond what you'd expect in many of their games. German engineering on display I guess.

So true! Crysis and the Rogue Squadron games were way ahead of their time graphically, while Fast Racing Neo was one of he more impressive Wii U titles technically.

Anno 1602.

Anno 1800 would be third. After Anno 1404.

Unfortunately, Anno 1602 doesn’t count as it was developed by the Austrian developer Max Design. Anno 1404 does live up to the criteria though, as it was co-developed by Blue Byte and Related Designs, both based in Germany. So I count it as a vote for that!

You are right.

Anno 1404 it is then.

Today I learned I haven't played a German developed game yet.

Looks like I haven't played many German games.
Clear favorite is The Book of Unwritten Tales, an adventure in 90's Lucas style (including a tribute to Monkey Island 2). I really need to get the prequel and sequel.
Honorary mention to Realms of Arkania 3: Shadows over Riva.

I went with Crysis. They managed to make a really intense and unique sandbox-lite FPS that was just a technical marvel. Very fun game.

Beside "can it run Crysis?", it was actually pretty good game - personally, I prefer Far Cry 1 way more, but Crysis 1 preserved (at least till the later part of the game) most of what made Far Cry1 so good.

Somehow I missed this! Crytek is pretty well known, but will go with a mobile developer here, Fishlabs and their Galaxy on Fire series. Surprised playing a game like this on my Nokia back in the day.

Other notable German indie mentions such as Cloudpunk, CrossCode, Dome Keeper, Dorfromantik...

You say tomato, I say tomato

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

Wasn’t going to write anything, but had to also say that Germany has a very healthy and surprisingly large successful indie scene.
The German independent games awards are full of quality every year.

Dungeons of Dreadrock and Duck Detective are amongst the German games I have enjoyed in recent years.

Also I loved Rogue Leader.

My favorite in terms of playtime is probably Anno 1404, the HOURS I put into that game!

But my favorite in terms of special connection is Signalis. I went to Uni with the dev duo and I‘ve seen all their early builds, the excitement when they landed a publisher etc. It was super cool to watch someone from my course succeed like that.
I was so excited when I finally got to play the game on my Switch as an official release.
