I think the Switch 2 Direct caused a boost in sales this week, and I wouldn't be surprised if Switch sales were even higher next week.  The Direct was divisive.  Clearly there are some who saw it and now can't wait to get a Switch 2.  However, others saw it and decided either to seriously delay getting a Switch 2 or not get one altogether.  The pricing in particular really burned some Nintendo fans.

I'm expecting a long tail to Switch sales as some people transition to Switch 2 and others hold fast to Switch 1.

That might be the case globally but why would the price be divisive in Japan when it's priced lower in Japan than other regions?  That's the one country that wouldn't have concerns about hardware pricing.

The price went up significantly compared to Switch 1 in the same region.  In fact it went up even more in Japan compared to the OLED model.  I pulled these prices from Amazon in Japan and US:

price (yen)Switch 2: console (ratio)price (USD)Switch 2: console (ratio)
Switch Lite216002.3 : 11992.3 : 1
Switch (Base)228002.2 : 12371.9 : 1
Switch OLED308001.6 : 13491.3 : 1
Switch 2500001 : 14501 : 1

Around the Network

Switch week 14 beat launch year 2017 week 14! Of course, it may have been supply-constrained.

Playing Xenoblade 2 before I buy Xenoblade 3 (otherwise I couldn't wait to play 3).

Can they announce a new Fire Emblem? A remake of Genealogy or Tellius would suffice !

At these prices I can see the base and Lite Switch 1 still having a meaningful role post-Switch 2, provided Nintendo doesn't decide to axe them quickly in order to push people to upgrade.

They don't seem to be saving much on the Lite compared to the base though, relative to the rest of the world?

The base model in US is refurbished, because Amazon didn't have any other option.  It might have been the same way in Japan, because that looks like a really cheap price.  The Lite and OLED models never left the box though, and there is clearly quite a bit of markup there comparing them to Switch 2.

I agree that Switch 1 will still have a meaningful role for a while though.  Parents are not going to want to buy an expensive Switch 2 for young kids.  I also think some just may not want to upgrade to Switch 2 for a while (or ever).

One thing you forget is the trade in option, many people will just trade in their Switch 1 models to get Switch 2 price down by a good amount.
