Yeah it has nothing to do with how many copies MK sells vs 3D Mario, that is fundamentally misunderstanding things. It's the fact that people want a great single player game to play when they buy a system. MK World might offer a bit more from a single player perspective than typical Mario Karts because of the whole open world thing, but still, a new 3D Mario game it is not. People want to pop in an epic new single player game when they get a new system. MK8D has sold like twice as much as BotW and came out in the second month of the Switch, but BotW is the reason why everyone was buying a Switch, not Mario Kart. Mario Kart is the game you get to play with friends, not the game you get to play for hours and hours right when you first get a system, Zelda or Mario is the game that makes a Nintendo system a must buy at launch. If no Mario had been the only big blunder it would have just been a big disappointment, but when combined with the sky high prices. I mean damn, Nintendo is gonna have to do some serious damage control or they better have a hell of a lineup coming this Summer and Fall. MP4, Poke Z-A, and Elden Ring are a start, if they can also get 3D Mario out for the holidays and a couple more big Nintendo games, along with some more huge third party games then by Christmas they may have made up for things a bit, as long as everyone likes to buy digital for $10 less expensive. Honestly I guess it is too late now but they should have included the camera with the system given the price of the system. The camera looks great for chat / multiplayer / streaming and that plus the MK bundle at only $50 extra would have mostly alleviated the shock from the $450/$500 price tag at least. |
MP4 and Pokemon are playable on Switch, a console that everyone owns (unlike the Wii U at that time). The third party won't move a console I think. It is really Mario kart alone in the first few months and DK from July.
I think that Mario Kart can carry 5 millions quickly, maybe even 6-7 millions, but after the console may run out of steam unless it become popular and trendy like the Switch did and Nintendo would have to bet heavily on the holiday sales.
Nintendo said that there will not be long term shortages and I believe them after this reveal.

@Zippy6 posted an image confirming from Nintendo's website the pricing. Looks like this would be after VAT is applied as this is pretty definitive. Translates to nearly $100 US to get MK World physically. That is crazy! |
Right but if that's after VAT is applied what's the base price for the EU? Does this mean Switch 2 games cost more in USA before VAT is applied? Or the same before VAT is applied? If USA games cost more before VAT then we can blame tariffs. If not then we cannot blame tariffs.

It depend of the country.
In France, videogames have a 20% VAT rate. 90€ would mean 72€ without VAT, equivalent to 78.15$ with current extchange rate.

That's roughly the same as the 79.99 euros price. AKA prices are the same without VAT tax. So at least in france digital is not more than physical. Or at least that's the way people in the USA would view it. We see tax as an alternate to the actual price because tax isn't baked into the pricetags here. If something costs $1 I have to add 7% sales tax and then it costs $1.07.

There is VAT on digital too. So physical is higher.
For the switch, the physical games were always cheaper than the digital due to retailers being competitive. For exemple Zelda TOTK is 70€ on the eshop and I bought it at launch for 55€ physical.

Yeah agreed MP4 and Pokemon being on the Switch as well definitely hurts the situation further. Which is why I said they need 3D Mario AND a couple more big Nintendo games before the year is out to start to recover from this blunder.
Like they really need a stellar lineup the rest of the year to convince consumers the prices are worth it and to make the case that even if the launch outside of MKWorld was lackluster there will be lots of reasons to buy the system before the end of the year.
Mario Kart does look AMAZING, I'll say that! I'm more excited for Mario Kart than I possibly imagined I would be. And the third party support is fantastic, the question of 'will the Switch 2 be powerful enough to finally bring back major 3rd party support to Nintendo' is 100% answered now in the affirmative. For Switch-only gamers MK World looks great and the the third party support is huge. But for console/PC gamers Nintendo finally getting the third party games they already have access to is not a selling point at all. Some might be excited about DK (it does look cool) but most are just disappointed it isn't Mario - there is a much smaller base of people who are gonna be super pumped about a DK game than a Mario game because everyone knows Mario is going to be one of the best games of the gen, while with DK we can just say it looks nice and hopefully it'll be good.
Anyway, yep, totally agreed. The most exciting looking Mario Kart ever and the power of the system will provide for good launch sales in June, and DK might provide decent strength in July but nothing compared to what Mario would have done...then it's a big question mark. Yes the awesome third party support and cross-gen Prime4 & Pokemon is gonna give people a lot more to play assuming they aren't just going to buy those games on Switch or already have the 3rd parties on console/PC, but yeah those aren't really direct system sellers. All those games tell me that I'll want to get a Switch2 eventually, but Mario Kart is the only thing I've seen that makes me want to get the system soon, but being primarily a multiplayer game and given the prices of everything it is not nearly enough.
It really is a classic Nintendo blunder of doing so much right but then completely dropping the ball in one or two ways that really matter and make no business sense.
Personally if I were to get the system at launch I'd end up playing MK a ton for a few days and then just play it occasionally after that and just be like okay now I'm waiting until Prime 4 or Elden Ring basically. Needless to say I do not plan to get the system soon.

Wait a year or two, no reason to buy any system at launch until there are games you must have.

I can say personally than I went from a "maybe day one if there is a big release" to " I will wait at least until the end of the year or even 1-2 year". That' a massive hype loss.
Personally I think that if the console is struggling, Nintendo will be forced to make a move, notably regarding the price of games. It could be like the 3DS who was suffering massively from his price before Nintendo stepped in and cut it.
But it never really recovered from what it would have done if Nintendo had done the proper thing right away. It's always harder to right a ship than to launch it properly the first time. Sony saved the PS3 but it never did PS2 or PS4 numbers.
I could be wrong but I don't think Nintendo realize yet how much price can be a sticky point to people, especially when they feel robbed. Charging more than PS5 and PC games for weaker hardware, weaker graphics and techs and smaller scope is going to be very hard to ignore.
Who can understand than the next Mario and Luigi on Switch 2 is going to cost more than Rise of the Ronin or the next Death Stranding game?
