Hey Trunks, I’ve got a question: Having glanced at NSW’s most recent fiscal report, it looks to me that the sales estimates here on VGChartz greatly overprojected official shipment figures. What’s up with that? Did NSW truly maintain strong sales momentum — as suggested by VGChartz figures — but simply just ship far fewer units than last year? Or was there an error on VGChartz’ part? My guess — assuming the former scenario — is that:

(i) NSW Q3FY24 saw a lot of over-shipment (as demonstrated by the weak Q4FY24 & VGChartz Q4C23 sales figures) whereas NSW Q3FY2025 met demand comfortably well,

(ii) it’s typical for console manufacturers not to ship too far above what has been sold when the market is as volatile (i.e. when a successor system coming so soon) in fears of dealing with an overabundance of unsold systems sitting in storage spaces,

(iii) etc.

Any of these theories sound at all plausible?

As sales start to slow the gap between shipped and sell-through also shrinks. However, if any adjustments do need to be made, I'll get them done during the week either before or when I start posting the January 2025 estimates with the Japan figures. We did get less data than usual for November and December, so had to extrapolate more of the sales figures than we usually do.

ah i see. And yeah, that’s kinda what i was thinking regarding to sell-through closing in on shipped. Ty! :)

For anyone curious here is the plan for when I start doing Switch 2 comparisons:

Japan:

  • NS2 vs NS1
  • PS5 vs PS4
  • XS vs X360

Europe:

  • NS2 vs NS1
  • PS5 vs PS4

US:

  • NS2 vs NS1
  • PS5 vs PS4
  • NS vs DS

Worldwide:

  • NS2 vs NS1
  • NS2 vs PS5
  • NS vs DS
  • PS5 vs PS4
  • PS5 vs PS3
  • PS5 vs Wii
  • PS5 vs XS
  • XS vs X1
  • PS5+XS vs PS4+X1

Dropping once NS2 comparisons start:

  • PS5 vs XS US
  • XS vs X1 EU
  • PS5 vs NS

That will be overall 2 more comparisons than I am doing now (If I am counting right). But NS vs DS and PS5 vs PS3 should be wrapped up by the end of the year, so will be back down to where I was before.

I also know some are pretty much impossible - XS vs X360 in Japan and XS vs XOne worldwide - But I want to keep at least a couple of Xbox comparisons going for now.

Taking a look the gap between shipped and sell-through did shrink by about 300K from the previous quarter. That isn't out of the question, but again if any adjustments are needed I will get them done this coming week, probably by Wednesday.
