Forums - Sales Discussion - Why Doesn't VGChartz track Steam Deck sales?

Hi All - Pretty self explanatory forum by its title. Why doesn't VGChartz track Steam Deck sales?

The 'console' achieved some success and I believe it's a direct competitor to (handheld) consoles. I'd love to see its sales tracked/estimated here on VGChartz.

We have no way of tracking sales numbers for the Steam Deck as Valve sells them directly and they do not share sales numbers. If Valve wanted to provide with us Steam Deck sales figures, we would be more than happy to report on it.

last time we heard it was just "multiple millions" back towards the end of 2023.... (atleast over 3million)
If you were to guess where it would be today, it'll probably be in the 5m+ range imo (I think sales slowed alot).
That's however just a random guess.

The best chance at it would be a scrapper comparing the data from top selling premium games and the Steam Deck. Even then, it would be an approximation since there are so many SKUs, refurb units and sales.

I don’t think this site “tracks” anything anymore, back in the day ioi would get data directly from some retailers and had a specific methodology to extrapolate based on that.

Now I think we just wait for whatever official data gets released like fiscal reports, Circana, Media Create, etc and basically guess for the regions we don’t get any data for.

Yeah, somewhere between 5-6 million would be my guess as well. Sales slowed as more rivals came out, but that was probably offset somewhat by the OLED release and massive price promotions.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Yeah that's what happens when there's just a single source of sales, Valve directly, and they're a private company that doesn't need to show public sales numbers.

The only non-Valve store that sells Steam Decks is something like GameStop, but they're refurbished models only.
