Forums - Gaming - Best and worst most extreme departures long running series have taken?

The worst to me is this. Bomberman Act Zero. I was reminded of it today seeing the new Pac-Man game.

This is one of the first 7th-generation games that took a Japanese series and thought we need to westernize it to be gritty. Well aside from the horrible art change. The game sucked. Not like oh this aesthetic sucks but the game is decent. No. It's one of the worst games on Xbox 360.

One of the best to me? Metroid Prime. Metroid was on hiatus for almost a decade. When it came back a lot of people were skeptical about moving it to first person. Some were scared it would abandoned Metroid Gameplay. Turns out it was as Metroid as Metroid gets. All that changed was perspective but that change made the series more atmosphere. Giving you a better sense of dread and being alone. Now no one questions a new Prime game they beg for it.

Best, RE4.

Took RE from a series I didn't care for to literally my favourite game of all time.

Worst, Starfox Adventures.

From an IP I adored to one I couldn't enjoy at all.

brother what on earth is that bomberman game??? Lol this is first time I've ever seen it.

Worst: Bomberman, Sonic, Final Fantasy with FF13 - Tho im unsure that one counts cause FF reinvents itself with every new entry.

Best: God of War

Best - Donkey Kong Country (I know the original games really put Nintendo on the map, but I much prefer when Rare took the character into a completely different direction)

Worst - Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (gone was the open world exploration and replaced with linear levels and repetitive enemies/gameplay. Franchise was dead to me till Fallout 3)

Best: Breath of the Wild. Don't get me wrong, Skyward Sword was a good game, but BOTW is one of my favourites of all time, it's physics and chemistry driven gameplay was what I dream games in "the future" would be like when I was a kid.

Worst: As someone who got their start on Zelda with Ocarina of Time, I really disliked the direction they went in with Wind Waker. Didn't like the art style, didn't like the sailing, and the Triforce shard quest was so bad I put it down and never picked it up again.

Wind Waker is the best Zelda. Amazing art. But Phantom Hourglass, now that is a pile of shit.

To each their own; Ocarina was my starting point for what Zelda should be, so I didn't like the change.

BEST

I would have to say one of the best was the Donkey Kong Countries on SNES. Not only is it one of the best trilogies ever, it took a simple and basic character and made it the best.

HONORABLE MENTION

You can also add the Fallout Series, going from a strategic top down style game to an immersive fps sandbox and proved incredibly successful.

WORST

One of the worst ill say was Alone in the Dark (360/PS3). Amazing original game and they transformed it into an unliveable RE4 clone.

Another best: Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Brought Kirby into full 3D in magnificent style.

Another worst: Saint's Row 2022. Cringey trash with none of the edge or fun of the older games.
