Forums - Gaming - Since the Switch Lite can be played on a TV, does that make it a home console?

It's hard to say w/o a fixed definition for "home console". My gut tells me the label "home console" should be used in reference to any system which was intentionally designed and initially marketed in such a way as to allowing for TV play, and goes beyond simply having to ability to be played on a TV screen.

That being said, do I *feel* that Nintendo Switch Lite is worthy of this arbitrary "home console" label? No. And, to clarify for Hardstuck Platinum, that's not to say NSW is not a home console, but rather NSWL is a handheld version of a home console. If PlayStation were to release a PS5 Portable, for instance, then it wouldn't make sense to cease referring to PS5 as a home console. All that means is there exists a handheld variant of a home console.

But again....we're talking about labels without any fixed definitions, which require "gut feeling" to reach a conslusion. It's an entirely subjective argument until a fixed definition exists.

Does it require a external power device like a power brick to run or does it run on battery?

If it runs on battery , its a portable.

That's like saying the PS One was a home console despite it having a screen attached

Can it be run without a power brick? If the answer is no, it is a home console.

Putting a screen on something doesnt make it a portable.

Any similarities to other posts is purely coincidental, as this is a genuine question for everyone here and I haven't seen this discussed before.

This thread is even worse than the other one.

No the Switch Lite is a handheld.

The GBA has a sku that can only be used with a TV, so clearly it's a home console.

Bruh... again with that topic and today is already Sunday...

So, I waked up right now and brushed my tooths, washed my face, I maked coffee and pancakes, I grabbed a cup of coffee and a plate with 3 pancakes with Strawberry Jam, I turned on my PC, I put Gintama to watch on my first monitor and open the forum on the second monitor.... and now I'm reading another thread, that is slighty the same that the other, that I did almost the same things when I waked up 3 days ago and opened the other thread about PSP and Switch.

Nintendo masterfully managed to abandon the home console market with Switch (1985-2017). It was, by far, the greatest slight-of-hand the industry has ever seen... but it happened. We now live in a handheld-only Nintendo reality.
