Forums - Sales Discussion - Switch Ships 146.04 Million Units as of September 2024

The question to be asked at this point is will switch 2 pass switch 1 in sales? Especially in Japan where Switch sales are very high. I think it's very unlikely, especially if the console costs 400 dollars. I believe that Nintendo will have a big challenge with the Switch 2

No, but i don't think passing Switch 1 is required for Switch 2 to be a success, by that logic every PS since PS2 has been a failure due to never passing the PS2 numbers. I think Nintendo do needs to become more like PS in the fact that Nintendo needs every new Nintendo console to at least pass 100 million unit sales to be deemed succesful. They can't afford to hit N64, Gamecube and Wii U sales numbers ever again for their consoles.

IF the Christmas Quater is only remotly close to good it has a chance of getting the DS next year. About the PS2 it depends. IF the'll do ~ 154 million by march and forcast ~ 6 million thats basically a lock. (I go with a maximum of 159,2 most likley even lower because i do not buy lying Ryans rounded up number that has never been confirmed. IF the PS2 really had hit or surpassed 160 million, Sony sure as hell would have announced that in 2013 after discontinuation). But the hold was quite good. I expected 145,3 million.

So, if the Christmas quater is rubbish, i see 155 million as the absolute floor but not much further than that. But IF the Switch gets to around DS level by march (a 6 million FC would certenly help to push my optimism in this case) 160 million is basically a lock. But i would not (yet) call it the floor.

We do have a Sony guy saying 160m+.
We have picture of the last made PS2, with the exact unit number of PS2 produced. They put it on the side of it, on a plaque.

That's why I said, it needs to be 162m to be without a doubt, the best selling ever.
If it stops at like 159, or 160m, we will always be debating which actually sold more.

162m and its settled.
Switch is the #1 of all time.

If the PS2 had hit 160 million, Sony would have announced it. This picture was a PS2 slim with a fantasy number on it. It was declared fake by reddit. Ryan cannot be belived. Many people here do not believe him. Even Sony themselfes put the PS2 at 155 million +. Why not 160 million if it did it? Answer: It did not get there. Full Stop! 155,1 million was the number Sony shipped till march 31.2012. These are facts. 162 million is a speculated number by reddit. In fact it was 161,81 or so. Ryan is a piss poor lier because he got wet pants that the Switch would pass it.

So IF the PS2 really reached or even passed 160 million, why the hell didn't they announce it back then?

I don't think I did the regional breakdowns last quarter, so more work for me tonight.

Q1 YoY change

Japan- 1.20m > .79m (-33%)
Americas- 1.18m> .65m (-45%)
Europe- .94m> .41m (-57%)
Other- .58m> .25m (-57%)
Total- 3.91m> 2.1m (-46%)

Q2 YoY change

Japan- .98m > .83m (-15%)
Americas- .85m > .94m (+10%)
Europe- .63m> .62m (-1%)
Others- .48m> .24m (-50%)
Total- 2.93m> 2.62m (-11%)

FY H1 YoY change

Japan- 2.18m > 1.62m (-26%)
Americas- 2.03m> 1.59m (-22%)
Europe- 1.57m> 1.03m (-34%)
Others- 1.06m> .49m (-54%)
Total- 6.84m> 4.72m (-31%)

Americas doing great after the reshipment in Q2. Japan and Europe steady decline, while Others hard decline. Overall a -31%, if this holds up then Switch will ship 10.8m units for the FY. Far below Nintendo's expectations of 12.5m.

Just a quick question. Did they do the investors meeting yet? That was supposed to be today, right?

Honestly it might get close at least.
Switch hardware was dated when it launched.
So for the same price today, its possible to make a many times more powerful handheld, than the Switch is.

Then its rumored to also be backwards compatible with switch 1 cartridges.

There still some old timers around (myself included) that likes that aspect.
Get something physical, own it, be able to play it, without first having to download half a game or many patches.
Its just put it in, and play.

This is also a huge appeal for parents, with kids.
They just want it to work, hassle free.

Xbox and PlayStation are not like that anymore.

If they also manage to have a option to upscale older Switch 1 games.... I could see that being huge (a lot do run in lower resolutions).
Again another big one for parents, or collectors.

So yes, unless Nintendo screws up, there's no reason it should be near equal at least.

It depends how long Nintendo will want to sell Switch 2.

Seriously all Nintendo handhelds lasted around 10 years. I do not see a discontinuation before 2027.

The reason is because it was more important to Sony to lump PS2 and PS3 numbers together to distract people from PS3 performance. 155 or 160 million is a useless difference, either way PS2 was still the best selling system of all time. For them the topic of most importance was the paint PS3 to be as healthy as possible even at expense of PS2 numbers
