This is still bunk. This article is just quoting the original rumor from some guy in the comments section on surfer girls blog. This has just gotten waaay too much press and shows one of the fundemental flaws of internet media. Some dufus said it in a comment section in some persons blog and now it's news.

Until Shacknews actually elaborates on the situation and identifies their source, I suspect this is merely a rumour gone wild.

Best to watch such comments I got attacked for saying much the same thing in another thread about this rumor. Basically I said it would be wonderful if Retro were relevant. I then said it would be even better if Nintendo had them develop mature games for the mature market. Which none of Nintendo's current first party studios do. I suppose we can always dream of a Nintendo first party strategy that is actually balanced.

 Yup, apparently it is true. Sad to see them go and I wish them the best.

@shams: One thing they have done for Nintendo is make a great trilogy of games. Don't know what qualifies as significant if 3 quality games doesn't. 

 

I hope it doesn't affect the quality of their games. Retro Studios is one of the higher quality nintendo developers.

They may not have contributed to nintendos success , but they still made some of the  best metroids.

 

They prolly were playing PS3 in the back room while they were supposed to be working...
