Forums - Sales Discussion - Official Big 3 Quarterly/Annual Results for shipments to date & projections

It will remain in production for a while yet:

Tokyo, 20 September, 2007 – At Tokyo Game Show 2007, Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), today made a keynote speech that demonstrated the strength and new plans of the PlayStation® business.

- Further Expansion of the PlayStation®2 business
In the 8th year from launch, PlayStation 2 still sees steady demands particularly in North America and Europe. Reaching the remarkable milestone of the 120 millionth shipment in the 7th year from launch, PlayStation 2 will have longer-tail business compared to its predecessor, the original PlayStation. Targeting at further expanding the business into the emerging markets, SCEI will continue to vigorously promote PlayStation 2, by introducing more and more exciting new games.

In last Thursday (28 / 8), the Board of Suframa (Superintendency of the Manaus Free Zone) approved the manufacture of the PlayStation 2 at Sony's plant in the Industrial Pole of Manaus.

Sought by UOL, Sony Brazil avoided details about the project, but issued the following official announcement:

"The Sony Brazil submitted recently, a project to SUFRAMA to ensure the possibility of investment in the Industrial Pole of Manaus, where it is decided by the marketing of the Playstation line in Brazil. In due course, the press will be notified and informed of the decision of company. "

The advisor's press Suframa, however, confirmed that the project involves a fixed investment of $ 504 thousand and total of $ 8.8 million. The production scheduled for the first year is 450 thousand units, up to the amount of 520 thousand in the third year. In total, 74 jobs will be generated. Has not been released when the unit starts to be produced.

That would put it at still in production in three years time. That's just for Brazil though, they should still need other manufacturing plants for South East Asia, Eastern Europe, India, and the rest of Latin America. PS2 will still be in production for emerging markets long after sales have dried up in the developed markets.

Anyone want to guess shipment figures for the year ending March 2010 while we wait until May for the official 'forecasts' from Nintendo and Sony? I'll throw in Microsoft too just for the hell of it.

Off the top of my head I'd go:

Wii HW  ~31m (82m LTD) (16m Americas/12.5m Others/2.5m Japan)

DS HW ~ 30m (132m LTD) (10.5m Americas/15m Others/4.5m Japan)

PSP HW ~ 13m (64m LTD) (3.25m/5.75m/4m)

PS3 HW ~ 12.5m (35.5m LTD) (4.5m/6.5m/1.5m)

X360 HW ~ 10m (41m LTD) (5.5m/4m/0.5m) (based on my estimate of 30.8m Xbox 360s through March 2008)

PS2 HW ~ 4.5m (142m LTD)

Wii SW ~ 240m (610m LTD)

DS SW ~ 200m (763m LTD)

PS3 SW ~ 125m (301m LTD)

360 SW ~  No idea, but probably near 100m (351m LTD?)

PS2 SW ~ 60m (~1530m LTD using production shipments and unit shipments)

PSP SW ~ 55m (260m LTD using production shipments and unit shipments)

With the quarter now over we have a longer wait than usual for Nintendo and Sony results due to it also being the end of the fiscal year for them. Microsoft's is a little closer though:

Microsoft: April 23
Nintendo: May 7
Sony: May 14?

Old, but hasn't been posted in this thread yet:

NINTENDO SHIPS 100 MILLIONTH PORTABLE NINTENDO DS SYSTEM

Nintendo DS Helped Redefine What a Video Game Could Be

REDMOND, Wash., March 11, 2009 - Somewhere - perhaps in Chicago, maybe in Paris, possibly in Tokyo - the 100 millionth system in the Nintendo DS™ franchise has been shipped to a distributor or a retailer as of March 6, 2009. The combined total sales of 100 million Nintendo DS systems, Nintendo DS Lite systems and Nintendo DSi™ systems represent a significant milestone in the life of this franchise, which is still going strong.

"Consumers have shown their love for Nintendo DS - 100 million times over," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We are grateful that people of all ages continue to respond to our products, and we will continue to look for ways to please current gamers and create new ones."

Since the original Nintendo DS launched in late 2004, its dual screens, touch screen and voice-recognition capabilities ushered in an era of new experiences not previously possible on portable systems. The successor, Nintendo DS Lite, launched with a slimmer, trimmer look.

The third iteration of the Nintendo DS hardware, Nintendo DSi, launches in the United States three and a half weeks from now on April 5. Nintendo DSi includes two cameras and the ability to record, manipulate and play sound files, and will allow consumers to personalize their very own Nintendo DSi experiences. It will again transform the way people access, experience, create and share portable content.

From the beginning, consumers around the world responded to the novel software options available on Nintendo DS. This is reflected by the fact that as of Dec. 31, 2008, there were 83 DS titles whose global shipment exceeded 1 million. Seven of these titles topped 10 million. Experiences like Nintendogs™ and the Brain Age™ series began a paradigm shift for the industry, as video games grew beyond the traditional audience of young men to include girls, adult men and women - and even seniors. Traditional games like New Super Mario Bros.™ and Mario Kart™ DS keep people coming back for more. Nintendo DS games demonstrate an "evergreen" quality: They frequently remain in the top-selling lists, months - or even years - after their launch. The system continues to expand into new territory with titles such as those in the Personal Trainer™ series.

I hope Sony does not push their report up an additional 2 weeks like last year. It was supposed to come out at the end of April but they push it into mid may. Of course this will likely be a whammy of a quarter if their early estimates were close.

Sony's Q4 earnings release has been mid-May for the last two years and will be again this year.

It was not set for mid may last year as I know for a fact that they pushed it up. With that said do they have the dates posted for release yet as you have a question mark above. So you know this how?

Because they haven't given an exact date yet, just Mid-May.
