Tokyo, 20 September, 2007 – At Tokyo Game Show 2007, Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), today made a keynote speech that demonstrated the strength and new plans of the PlayStation® business.

In the 8th year from launch, PlayStation 2 still sees steady demands particularly in North America and Europe. Reaching the remarkable milestone of the 120 millionth shipment in the 7th year from launch, PlayStation 2 will have longer-tail business compared to its predecessor,the original PlayStation. Targeting at further expanding the business into the emerging markets, SCEI will continue to vigorously promote PlayStation 2, by introducing more and more exciting new games.

In last Thursday (28 / 8), the Board of Suframa (Superintendency of the Manaus Free Zone) approved the manufacture of the PlayStation 2 at Sony's plant in the Industrial Pole of Manaus.
Sought by UOL, Sony Brazil avoided details about the project, but issued the following official announcement:
"The Sony Brazil submitted recently, a project to SUFRAMA to ensure the possibility of investment in the Industrial Pole of Manaus, where it is decided by the marketing of the Playstation line in Brazil. In due course, the press will be notified and informed of the decision of company. "
The advisor's press Suframa, however, confirmed that the project involves a fixed investment of $ 504 thousand and total of $ 8.8 million. The production scheduled for the first year is 450 thousand units, up to the amount of 520 thousand in the third year. In total, 74 jobs will be generated. Has not been released when the unit starts to be produced.

That would put it at still in production in three years time. That's just for Brazil though, they should still need other manufacturing plants for South East Asia, Eastern Europe, India, and the rest of Latin America. PS2 will still be in production for emerging markets long after sales have dried up in the developed markets.
