Forums - Nintendo - BioWare: Is the Wii Actually Gaming?

Bioware make good games? i can not think of any. Mass effect, KOTOR were all boring games of what I have heard.

Me... I always thought games were defined by the gameplay... not the story.

I mean... what's the story behind Tetris... or Motorstorm or Madden?

Actually what he's saying makes perfect sense. None of the current Wii lineup are really defined by their stories. Would you like to argue that Super Mario Galaxy's story was awesome? Super Mario Strikers? Brawl? ...? The Wii doesn't have a lot of games with detailed stories at the moment.

Okami and Fire Emblem say hi

In all seriousness though, it sounds to me like he thinks a market is being underserved. You know what you should do with underserved markets? As proved by the Wii's success, the answer isn't "Ignore it".

I don't think his comments in that respect are that off-base, but if he wants to tell me that a game without a strong narrative isn't gaming, I would just laugh in his face and go play Galaxy. A story does not make a game.

Fire Emblem I'll give you, but from what I know of Okami it's no more defined by its story than Zelda.

And a game without a strong narrative isn't Bioware gaming. Story-driven RPG stuff is what they do.

If your going by that... what does the PS3 currently have that fills that? Folklore... maybe? Certaintly not Oblivion.  Games with long complex stories tend to take a long time to make.  It's not a matter of system so much as it is time.

I should also like to add that BioWare has a deplorable tendency to DROWN their games in narrative.

Sorry to quote Zero Punctuation, but game dialogue should be succinct and punchy, not swimming with piles and piles of useless information which has little relevance to anything you're doing in the game or ever WILL do in the game.

And BioWare claiming the title of "best western RPG developer" is laughable because there really isn't much for competition, is there? (Bethesda, and?)

I really stopped reading your post here because there was really nothing more to read.  Not only is it clear that you do not like the games they produce which is entirely fair since not everyone has the same taste in games, but you also clearly lack the ability to read what has been said.  I mentioned best WRPG developer because IMO that's what they are.

The fact that you can't even name their competition (Bethesda? Obsidian? Red Studio? Soon maybe Lionhead) just shows that you're entirely ignorant of this subject.  If you can't add to the discussion then don't try.

I agree.  The 360, PSP, and DS are the only systems that could be considered at this point.

^Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, NG Sigma, etc... Not exactly BioWare-esque gaming, but there are significant storylines in each game (haven't played Sigma but since it's a remake of NG, I tossed it in there).

Significant but not nearly up to the level WoW is holding as a standard.

But are those games story-driven? NG is the only one I've played significantly, and I'd say no. No more than Okami, or Call of Duty 4, or any number of other games.

Well said Viper1.

The difference here is that I understand what his point was whereas a lot of people are just dismissing it as casual Wii-bashing...

A person in his position must take care with what words he/she chooses to express their opinions with.

This guy failed at such a simple task to the degree that his words were callous in tone. Because he chose that tone it is quite easy to associate it with some form of angst against the Wii. Or in other words, Wii-bashing as you called it.

He took it upon himself to be illogical and rash where there was no provocation or casue for such tone. Can you give me one sinlge psychological reason why one would say what he did without any actual implied negativity?

People looking to be offended will be. If you want to believe what he's saying was insulting, you will. At this point I'm wondering if some Wii owners are to the point where any time anyone mentions the Wii without a boatload of praise they become annoyed. I'm a fellow Wii owner and I'm not insulted because I can see what he's talking about.

You agree that games that aren't story-driven aren't real games?

Go back and read what he said instead of making strawman arguments.  All he's saying is that heavily story-driven games and the like have thus far not been the focus of the Wii and he's dead-on-balls accurate with that assessment.

Hehe, funny.

But what gets me, is he is saying anything previous to this gen and the PS3 and Xbox 360 could not have a story. So for instance, no Final Fantasy has ever had a story.

I won't argue that Wii is lacking in good story driven games.  I really hope that changes over time.  But his statement doesn't make much sense.  If he's just plain talking about the Wii lacking story driven games currently, as opposed to it's ability to have one, then it would make good buisness sense to be the one of the first to fill that hole in the best selling current gen system, not the other way around, and avoid it.
