Forums - Nintendo - BioWare: Is the Wii Actually Gaming?

hunter_alien said:
lol .... whats with all the arguing ? Its clear that Nintendo fans will allways fight so the Wii to be treated as a hardcore console ... I agree , it could easily be , but at this point the library is lacking a lot , and untill Nintendo will give us a couple of more games like Metroid Prime or Eternal Darkness it will have this issue . Also , why cant developers finally bring to it some real killer games . Like not Resident Evil port , or a casual-oriented shooter , but a real , brand new RE game that uses the Wiis cool new abilities ? Or A real soulcalibur game , and not a crap beat-em-up ? Or and actual GTA game , that is even bigger than SA was , because its clear that the Wii could be capable .

I was going to flame the ever loving shit out of you, but you plugged Eternal Darkness, making you a protected species.

Drat.

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks

I see the rest of you already have the situation in hand, so I'll just ask if anyone here knows what exactly is causing this latest wave of "I hate the Wii" to spew forth from the bowels of the internet. If they don't like the system, why can't they just say so and move on, rather than invent half-baked excuses? Although if they do that, I suppose I'll be deprived of my morning joke article. C'est la vie.

Actually what he's saying makes perfect sense. None of the current Wii lineup are really defined by their stories. Would you like to argue that Super Mario Galaxy's story was awesome? Super Mario Strikers? Brawl? ...? The Wii doesn't have a lot of games with detailed stories at the moment.

Okami and Fire Emblem say hi

In all seriousness though, it sounds to me like he thinks a market is being underserved. You know what you should do with underserved markets? As proved by the Wii's success, the answer isn't "Ignore it".

I don't think his comments in that respect are that off-base, but if he wants to tell me that a game without a strong narrative isn't gaming, I would just laugh in his face and go play Galaxy. A story does not make a game.

Fire Emblem I'll give you, but from what I know of Okami it's no more defined by its story than Zelda.

And a game without a strong narrative isn't Bioware gaming.  Story-driven RPG stuff is what they do.

Zelda, RE:4, Okami, Guitar Hero Aerosmith :). Okay the last one was a joke. But seriously the Wii is certainly as capable of story as a PS3 or Xbox360. Which, coincidently most of their games don't have stories anyway. The bigger point is that I see the cycle as this.

NES - > PS2 Talking to a random person on the street and letting them know you game for 10+ hrs a week would pretty much categorize you as a nerd.

Wii -> A console finally comes along that appeals to everyone. Maybe it doesn't have as many "hardcore" games as the PS3 or 360. Frankly, I don't care because opinion will vary and I don't want to go there. But adults, women, kids, and the hardcore all have significant interest in this console. I talk about the Wii at work quite a bit with people who would not be interested in a traditional console.

Developers now -> That's not gaming. You all suck!! I'm glad you don't play our games. Your money is no good here!! If I would have to develop in 480p I'd quit developing.

So you see the point? There is no reason for the comment at all. If you don't think there is a market for your games fine. The Wii definately has a different demographic. But to tear down the Wii as uncapable of story is A. idiotic, and B. stupid from a business perspective. If their is an application that involves video output, has interaction, and is somewhat fun, I don't know how you cannot categorize that as a video game. Like you said, the gaming world largely grew up on the Donkey Kongs, Super Marios, Sonics, even pongs. None of these have any true story.

Zelda and RE4?  Nah.  Bioware sets the standards far to high for those two games to even come within sight of Bioware's bar.  Okami... is still sitting in its packaging as I enjoy Skies of Arcadia Legends.  No comments other than the above which is based on what I've heard.

Also, is anyone else sick of people using the "It appeals to everyone" excuse to explain away the drought of certain kinds of games.  I don't care how widespread its appeal is or what it's sales are, if it doesn't have the games we're talking about it doesn't have them.  Heavy story-based games are not prevelant on the Wii.  Period.

And Greg isn't tearing the Wii down saying it's not capable, he's saying that's not what the Wii is about in his opinion.  You just talked about the Wii appealing to many different crowds versus a niche (like RPG fans?) so don't backpedal on that.

again, whats with the retarded guys lately?

this is another case of no integrity and any lack of business sense. i mean for gods sake....

Yes of course, let's ignorantly insult the integrity two guys sitting at the top of what is probably the best WRPG developer currently in existence.

Since when has success prevented someone from saying something completely stupid?

The rEVOLution is not being televised

What was the comment on Final Fantasy 6? I forgot where I read it, and I'm going to misquote it, but it went something like this.

"Final Fantasy 6 was the last time Square didn't have any graphical boundaries to push and had to achieve greatness with characters and story instead".

I love games with good narrative. I even rather enjoy games with decent, if occasionally cliched or patronizing narrative, as originality is dead. But I cannot comprehend the idea that somehow the Wii cannot convey narrative when systems generations ago produced fantastic stories still loved to this day. This confuses me greatly. This is not the Atari age where text was a legitimate size issue. This is simply when developers are choosing what to put their most resources into. If the answer to that is narrative, and not graphics, there's no reason to not use a Wii, but people lie with their answers sometimes.

Well said Viper1.

The difference here is that I understand what his point was whereas a lot of people are just dismissing it as casual Wii-bashing...

Ken Kutaragi, anyone? Hell, let's go further back - the Tramiels. Commercial success does not you bulletproof, and the mere fact that Bioware does very well does not mean that a definition of gaming that excludes Tetris is any less idiotic.
