Blame for aid failure lies ‘squarely with Israel’: Former UNRWA spokesman
Former UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness has rejected Israeli claims that the UN is to blame for inadequate aid deliveries in Gaza, saying it is a “complete false narrative … to try and detract from what’s been going on”.
As evidence, Gunness said he had seen documentation showing that from July 16 to 22, the Israeli government either denied, delayed or heavily restricted 79 percent of the UN’s aid convoy requests – even as reports of starvation in Gaza intensified.
“So let’s be clear: The blame lies fairly and squarely with the Israelis,” he told Al Jazeera.
Gunness added that the recent plans for aid airdrops – typically a last-ditch effort to reach starving populations – highlight the failure of the Israeli-backed GHF to deliver food effectively.
Airdrops are only happening, he said, “because the Israelis know full well that we’re seeing starving babies on television sets and that Israel’s allies have seen enough”.
Israeli military ‘instrumental’ in Gaza chaos, looting of aid
These chaotic scenes that we see almost every single day, the Israeli military have been quite instrumental in [them].
They created a huge power vacuum across the Gaza Strip where law enforcement are unable and do not have the ability to control any of the [aid] trucks or lead them into the designated areas.
The GHF – a notorious organisation – not only controls the entry of aid, but it favours a special group of business tycoons across the Gaza Strip, those who profited from the war for the past 22 months.
They favour them to get to areas where the aid is available; they take it, they hoard it, and then they resell it at a very high price – double or triple the standard price – to middlemen who take it to the black market.
Most of the chaos is a result of the desperation. Most of the violence is due to hunger because [people are in] survival mode. It’s not about safety anymore, it’s about survival. People try to get their hands on whatever is available.
The [aid] trucks, many of them, according to many truck driver testimonies, they are instructed by the Israeli military to make stops in the middle of the way on their way to designated locations in order to encourage looting. This has been confirmed by many truck drivers.
10 killed by Israeli fire near Gaza aid site
Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting more deadly fire from Israeli forces near an aid site in the northwestern area of Gaza. The shooting has killed at least 10 people and wounded dozens more waiting for aid supplies, they report, citing the enclave’s emergency services.
The latest casualties bring today’s total death toll in Gaza to 63, our colleagues report.
